Safety is one of the most important considerations when cycling. Whether you are riding a gravel bike, mountain bike or heading out for a fast everyday ride, your helmet needs to fit securely, feel comfortable and perform reliably in changing conditions. Our bike sales advisor and mountain enthusiast Christoph tested the Scott Sierra Mips over several months.
Christoph has been mountain biking for many years and also took up gravel riding around a year ago. His extensive cycling experience and familiarity with a range of different helmets put him in a strong position to assess the fit, usability and everyday practicality of the Scott Sierra Mips.

How we tested it: gravel, mountain biking and changing conditions
Christoph tested the Scott Sierra Mips from mid-April to mid-July. He wore the helmet on tarmac, trails and gravel tracks, using it on both his gravel bike and mountain bike. In total, the helmet was used on around ten rides covering approximately 400 kilometres. The weather conditions ranged from hot and sunny to wet and rainy. This gave the Scott Sierra Mips the opportunity to demonstrate how well its ventilation, fit and adjustment system performed in both warm and wet conditions.

Our test focused primarily on fit, comfort, build quality, functionality and features. A helmet needs to stay securely in place, be easy to adjust and remain stable even when riding over rough terrain.

First impressions: premium, sporty and well made
The Scott Sierra Mips makes a high-quality impression as soon as you take it out of the box. There are no sharp edges, protruding sections around the helmet shell or visible manufacturing flaws. This reflects the level of quality Christoph has come to expect from Scott. The helmet also feels premium in the hand. Its slightly textured surface gives it a refined finish and reinforces its sporty character. The design is clearly performance focused and takes inspiration from the aerodynamically optimised Scott Centric. Overall, the helmet feels modern, robust and exceptionally well made.
Fit and comfort during testing
Adjusting the Scott Sierra Mips is quick and intuitive. The fit ring and dial at the rear allow the helmet to be adapted precisely to the shape of the head. The height of the fit system can also be adjusted across four different positions. The rubberised adjustment dial is large enough to grip easily and is positioned within easy reach. This makes it straightforward to fine-tune the fit while riding or when wearing gloves.
The dial locks into place with a clearly audible click. The level of resistance when turning and locking the dial feels well balanced. Adjusting the straps is equally straightforward and requires very little force. There is also no need to remove the strap attachments from the helmet shell.
During testing, the Scott Sierra Mips felt secure and comfortable. Christoph did not experience any uncomfortable pressure points. Despite the integrated Mips system, the helmet remained stable and did not shift around, even on rough trails. Christoph rated the fit as very good. Compared with the Scott Centric, however, the Sierra has a slightly shorter shape.
At 330 grams, the Scott Sierra Mips is not an exceptionally lightweight helmet. However, its weight is typical for a helmet in this category with this level of equipment. It did not feel noticeably heavy, even during longer rides.
Ventilation, protection and on-bike usability
Ventilation is one of the Scott Sierra Mips’ greatest strengths. Its generously sized vents help keep your head cool, even in hot weather. This is particularly noticeable and beneficial on longer rides. The integrated Mips system also provides an additional level of protection and ensures the helmet incorporates current safety technology.
Another practical feature is the ability to store your glasses in the two outer front vents. This makes the helmet more versatile for everyday use and longer tours. The large number of ventilation openings does come with one minor drawback: insects can occasionally find their way inside the helmet. Some manufacturers use mesh inserts in the front vents to prevent this. The Scott Sierra Mips does not include this type of mesh. The advantage, however, is that the vents remain suitable for securely holding your glasses.
Everyday use and care
The Scott Sierra Mips can be worn with or without the visor. This allows you to vary its appearance and adapt the helmet to different types of riding. As a result, it works equally well for gravel riding and mountain biking.
Cleaning and maintenance are also straightforward. The internal pads feel high quality, remain securely in position and can be removed easily for cleaning. The hook-and-loop fasteners inside the helmet shell are neatly bonded in place, so they do not feel as though they will detach the next time the pads are removed.
Another useful detail is the large opening in the fit system, which makes it easy for riders with longer hair to pull a ponytail through the back.

Conclusion: a versatile helmet for gravel and cross-country riding
The Scott Sierra Mips impressed us with its excellent build quality, sporty design and high level of comfort. Its secure fit, easy-to-use adjustment system and generous ventilation were particular highlights during testing. Whether used on a gravel bike, loose tracks or mountain bike trails, the helmet remained comfortable and reliably in place.
There are a couple of minor drawbacks. The straps can occasionally shift, and insects may sometimes enter through the open ventilation slots. However, neither issue is particularly significant in everyday use, and they only slightly detract from an otherwise excellent overall impression.
The Scott Sierra Mips is a great choice for anyone looking for a well-made, versatile and protective helmet for gravel and cross-country riding. It is particularly appealing to riders who find the Scott Centric too expensive and do not mind carrying a little extra weight. Overall, the Scott Sierra Mips earns a clear recommendation for cyclists looking for a sporty helmet with a comfortable fit, secure hold and excellent value for money.
