Cross country boots – skating vs. classic

Generally, one could say that the skating boot offers more wrist support than the classic boot does. Why is that so? Because of the skating technique. When skating, torsional forces come in play. Moreover are skating boots stiffer in their sole, because when skating, you do not need to bend your sole, instead you are looking for torsional and forward stiffness.

Now how do I find the cross country skating boot that fits me?

First of all: The boots needs to fit properly. In cross country skiing, you will often spend several hours on skis and if your feet start hurting, it will not be as much fun. As of this, it is certainly recommendable to try and test several different models.

Furthermore is the needed binding system crucial. Here, you will find several different norms – which is why not all boots fit all skating bindings. If you have already bought your cross country skating ski, you will need to choose your boots accordingly.

The stem and the sole of your cross country skating boot

The boots differentiate in what kind of material they are made of. Generally, there are three different versions, all having their advantages and disadvantages.

Stem and sole made of plastic: This boot is a bit cheaper than the others, making it very suitable for beginners. Also, it is not as stiff and therefore not entirely as stable as those made of carbon. But to many, due to this, it will be more comfortable since it is also a bit warmer. To work against the lack of stiffness, many of these boots are equipped with a strap above the wrist to give more stability.

Carbon stem and plastic sole: The carbon offers additional stability in the stem. Especially to the side, the boot will therefore yield less, which is really important when skating!

Stem and sole made of carbon: Performance and light weight is what this boot is all about! The carbon makes it weigh less. Also, it is extremely stiff, both sideways and in the sole. This makes the boot itself a bit cooler than those made of plastic – because if its all about beingt light-weight, you might as well go all the way! But those, who are using these high-performance boots will certainly move a lot anyways and not be freezing.

What else is there to consider when purchasing cross country skating equipment? Other than your skis, bindings and boots, you will also need cross country poles. And the right clothing – it should be warm but not too thick and not to heavy, at the same time be breathable and wind deflecting!
