What are caps?

A cap, also known as a cap or cappy, is a visor hat that originated as headwear for baseball players. Nowadays, however, the caps with a large sun visor are very versatile and are particularly popular as part of leisurewear. The caps not only serve as a shield from the sun, but also as a fashion accessory.

What types of caps are there?

For many people, most caps probably look identical. However, there are many different variants with individual characteristics in the world of caps. Here we explain what each cap looks like and how you can recognize the models.

• Baseballcaps: This version of the cap is the absolute classic among caps. Baseball players from the New York Yankees began wearing these caps in the 1840s - hence their name. Baseball caps are characterized by their strongly curved visors and the medium-height, rounded head section. This versatile model is available in numerous colors, with various closures and as merchandise from many different sports teams.

• Snapback-Cap: The term 'snapback' actually only refers to the snap fastener of this cap variant. However, snapback has come to stand for the entire genre of caps. The special features of snapback caps are the flat to slightly curved visors and the higher profile of the cap.

• Strapback-Caps: These caps are also available in many different variations, which is why it is not so easy to describe the one true strapback cap. However, the feature that all these caps have in common is the fastening system, which works with a kind of strap. This system enables infinite adjustability, which means that this cap always fits perfectly.

• Dad-Caps: These caps are very similar to classic baseball caps. The difference lies in the visors, which are not reinforced in the dad caps and are therefore not stable. In addition, the profile of these caps is usually flat.

• Trucker-Caps: Trucker caps are characterized by the mesh insert at the back of the cap. The front of the cap, on the other hand, is additionally reinforced with foam, which is why these caps are often nicknamed mesh caps.

• 5-Panel & 6-Panel-Caps: The 5- or 6-panel caps consist of 5 or 6 individual pieces of fabric. The panels are arranged in different ways, for example like six pieces of cake placed together in a circle.

The classic baseball cap is therefore not representative of all caps, but stands alone. Although most caps look similar, you should find out in advance which cap you want and familiarize yourself (at least briefly) with the respective special features.

The various fastening options for more individuality

To ensure that your cap not only looks good, but also fits properly, there are various fastening options. These are usually located on the back of the cap and allow individual adjustment to your head circumference. It is important to know that caps are usually only available in one size, which is abbreviated as One Size, One Size Fits All (OSFA) or also One Size Fits Most (OSFM).

• Strapback: This version has a strap on the back of the cap that can be easily and continuously adjusted.

• Snapback: Most people are probably familiar with this closure. The fastener consists of two plastic parts. A longer part with several buttons or studs and a part with matching holes. The cap can be easily adjusted to your head circumference and joined together using the snap fastener.

• Velcro fastener: The well-known and popular Velcro fastener can also be found on some caps. The two ends of the Velcro fastener are often made of rubber and can be stretched as required.

• Clip fastener: Some caps are also equipped with a clip fastener, as you would find on a rucksack, for example. The buckle is usually attached to a fabric strap, which can be individually adjusted.

• Buckle closure: The most common type of fastener is the buckle fastener. A buckle is attached to one side of a fabric strap through which the strap passes. Here too, the fastening strap can be individually adjusted and the protruding end can usually be hidden inside the cap.

What are fitted caps?

Fitted caps are caps that are manufactured without an adjustable fastener and are therefore available in fixed sizes. In contrast to snapbacks or strapbacks, which have an adjustable back, fitted caps are only available in certain sizes that cannot be additionally adjusted. Due to the lack of buckles, clips and the like, these caps offer a clean, seamless look and a comfortable fit.

How do I find the right size for a fitted cap?

WelI if you are interested in one of the many fitted cap models, it is important to choose the right size. This is the only way to ensure that your cap fits snugly and is comfortable to wear. Follow these tips to find the right size for you:

• Take a tape measure and place it around your head.

• Place the measuring tape so that it is about one centimeter above your eyebrows and ears, i.e. approximately where the cap will sit.

• Be careful not to pull the measuring tape too tight, it should be loose but not slack.

• Note the value where the band crosses: this is your head circumference.

• Compare the measured head circumference with the size chart of the respective manufacturer.

• Try on your cap before you make a final decision. Your cap should sit comfortably on your head without being too tight or too loose.

From everyday work to street looks: how to style your caps

For many men and women, the cap is an absolute must-have and an integral part of any outfit. However, it is important to know how you can style your outfits around your favorite cap.

For a casual look, you can, for example, combine a classic baseball cap with a simple T-shirt, a pair of well-fitting jeans and comfortable sneakers. For a casual streetwear style, pair your snapback cap with a hoodie, jogging bottoms or cargo pants. If you want to wear your caps for sports, we recommend a cap made of a breathable material in combination with your favorite sportswear.

A retro look is achieved with a vintage-style cap, combined with retro elements such as baggy jeans, an oversized shirt and sneakers in a retro design. Caps with eye-catching logos are particularly popular here.

Additional accessories such as sunglasses, bracelets or watches can complement and round off your outfit. It is also important that your cap is clean and in good condition, as a well-groomed cap contributes significantly to the overall impression.

How do I care for my cap properly

If you want to clean your caps in the washing machine, you should check the washing temperature specified by the manufacturer beforehand. For the washing programs, you should use a gentle or delicate wash cycle and, if required and available, the hand wash cycle. Make sure you don't use the spin function and only use a little detergent and no fabric softener. Optionally, you can use a so-called cap washer. This plastic frame ensures that your cap does not become deformed during washing.

If you don't have a hand wash function on your washing machine, fill a sink or bowl with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent. Use a soft cloth or brush to gently clean the cap and then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Ordinary household vinegar (5%) can be an effective solution if you have problems with unpleasant odours or perspiration stains. Before using this tip, you should definitely test the color fastness of your cap. To do this, apply the vinegar to a small, unnoticeable area and wait to see how the material behaves. If there are no problems, you can rub the vinegar with a cloth on the affected areas and leave it to work for a few hours (approx. 1-2 hours). Then you should clean your cap as usual, for example by hand or in the washing machine.
