Classic Ski

With a sidecut of around 44 millimeters, classic cross-country skis are compatible with all classic tracks. These skis differ in terms of their base. Due to the classic technique, these skis require a grip zone under the binding area, which creates friction upon contact with the snow. This so-called "climbing zone" is made of various materials depending on the ski—either inserts of mohair, small grooves milled into the base, or treated with climbing wax and klister. In classic cross-country skiing, you move forward with a diagonal stride technique, similar to natural walking, where one ski always glides in the track, while the other provides the push-off. The grip zone under the ski provides traction, allowing you to push powerfully forward. Depending on the category, classic skis come with a binding pre-installed. These bindings differ in their attachment on the binding plate and adjustability, depending on the manufacturer and model. On most classic cross-country skis, the bindings can be adjusted while you’re in them, allowing you to tailor them to the terrain and snow conditions.

Skating Ski

Skating skis represent the newer Nordic generation, which, due to the skating technique, do not require a grip zone. Skating differs from classic cross-country skiing in that it involves longer gliding phases and a slightly more dynamic running feel. In skating cross-country skiing, you move forward with a sideward push-off technique, similar to ice skating, where the skis glide across the snow in a V-shape. Due to the sideward pressure and stresses during the weight transfer, skating boots are equipped with stiffening cuffs. As with classic skis, the bindings can be adjusted on the skis to improve gliding or guiding properties. Additionally, the running surface features a central groove that helps with direction control. Some models, thanks to their strong sidecut, also offer a more energy-efficient return to the forward direction.

Backcountry Ski

For those who venture off prepared trails and find their mind cleared in the wilderness, backcountry skis are the perfect equipment. These skis are wider than classic and skating skis and often come with steel edges, making them ideal for challenging, snowy terrain. The movement on backcountry skis involves a combination of gliding forward and uphill movement with climbing skins or special grip zones. During descents, the wide skis with steel edges provide stability and secure handling in the terrain. Backcountry skis designed for deeper snow resemble touring skis and are equipped with sturdy bindings that offer high stability during descents.

What to Consider When Buying Your Cross-Country Ski Equipment

How to Find the Right Size for Your Cross-Country Skis

Every cross-country ski model, regardless of the manufacturer, is available in different sizes. The camber (preload) for each size is recommended for a specific body weight, and this information is always included in the product description of the skis. If you are between two sizes, your skill level and technique will determine the best choice for you. For particularly light skiers, some models are also available in soft versions. These skis have less camber compared to the reference model in the same size. Similarly, skis in stiff or hard versions offer slightly more camber than the reference model. At Sport Conrad, we offer a wide selection of high-quality cross-country skis from renowned brands such as Rossignol, Salomon, Atomic, Fischer, and many more. Whether you're a beginner or a professional, you'll find the perfect equipment for your next winter adventure with us.

What to Consider When Choosing Cross-Country Ski Boots

Especially in the beginning, you might face the decision of which technique to choose: skating or classic? And are there shoes suitable for both? Yes, there are!

Combi cross-country ski boots give you the option to try both techniques. However, if you’ve decided on one discipline, we recommend specific boots for each.

Classic cross-country ski boots feature a flexible sole and no cuffs to minimize restriction of shaft rotation. Since a significant up-and-down movement occurs during double poling, a high degree of shaft rotation and sole flexibility are beneficial.

On the other hand, skating cross-country ski boots have a cuff that supports the shaft. This helps to better transfer the lateral force to the ski. As a result, skating boots provide more stability and power transfer on the ski.

For backcountry cross-country ski boots, more stable shoes are used due to their dimensions. Depending on the binding system, these boots often use a PIN system similar to those found on alpine touring boots. Make sure that your boots are compatible with the binding system of your skis when making a purchase. Through our configurator, you can easily put together a complete set.
