Sweatshirts, jumpers, hoodies - what's what?

At first glance, sweatshirts, jumpers and hoodies may seem almost identical - but they are not! As a rule, they all have long or at least 3/4 sleeves to keep you warm on cold days. That's what they have in common, but the numerous models also have some differences.

The classic sweater is usually made from a fine knit material, such as wool or cotton. The sweater can have different shapes, such as high-necked, with a turtleneck or with a button placket like a cardigan. In contrast to the pullover, the sweatshirt is made of thicker and softer materials, such as blended fabrics or fleece. Classic sweatshirts also have a round neckline and ribbed cuffs on the arms and hem. The hoodie is basically a sweatshirt, but it also has the characteristic hood at the back of the hoodie.

The main differences between the three tops are therefore mainly in the material and fit. The classic sweater is therefore: knitted and close-fitting, available in different colours, patterns and cuts.

Comfortable & warm: which material for my sweater?

As with all items of clothing, the material also plays a major role with sweaters. Especially in the colder seasons, sweaters are popular basics that can be combined with almost anything. Regardless of figure type and age, sweaters can bring out the best in any look. However, the material should be right, as the wrong materials can make them uncomfortable to wear because the garment chosen is too cold or too warm.

Cotton: Cotton is probably the classic material for sweaters and co. This natural fibre offers outstanding thermal insulation, is particularly skin-friendly and is easy to clean. The disadvantage, however, is that cotton takes quite a while to dry and is only partially warming, especially when knitted very thinly.

Wool: Wool is particularly warming and is therefore also suitable for really cold winter days. The material is also particularly comfortable to wear and is usually ideal for allergy sufferers. However, it should be noted that some types of wool can become scratchy over time, when not being caered of properly. In addition, wool is usually more difficult to clean (hand wash) and can tend to felt if handled incorrectly.

Viscose, Cupro oder Lyocell: These man-made fibres are all particularly breathable and skin-friendly, making them comfortable to wear and skin-friendly. They are also very easy to care for, which makes cleaning particularly simple. The disadvantages here are that these materials are not particularly elastic and can therefore appear somewhat stiff.

Polyacryl, Polyester or Polyamide: These synthetic fibres are widely used and are characterized by their good strength, dimensional stability, low wrinkling and easy cleaning. However, the disadvantage of synthetic fibres such as polyacryl is that they are sensitive to heat and could therefore shrink if washed too warm.

Which materials suit you and your idea of the perfect sweater best is entirely up to you, as all materials have their own individual advantages and disadvantages. We recommend a sweater made from different materials. This is because a mix of natural and synthetic fibres combines the best properties of each material.

How do I recognize a high-quality sweater?

Of course, you can recognize a high-quality sweater first and foremost by the materials used. You can make sure that your sweater contains a high proportion of natural fibres. Ideally, your sweater should be made largely from sustainable materials such as organic cotton.

The fit should also be ideal - make sure that your sweater is not warped or uneven when you try it on. Finally, you can look out for other signs of good workmanship. For example, make sure that buttonholes are evenly finished and not frayed. The buttons themselves should also be well stitched so that they don't fall off.

How can I prevent and remove some pilling from my sweaters?

Knitwear in particular is prone to the formation of small pieces of fluff and pilling. These can not only be annoying to wear, but also make your sweaters look old and worn.

Pilling is not unnatural in itself, as the small knots are formed when fabrics rub against each other. This can happen during everyday wear, for example by rubbing your arms against your upper body or by carrying bags. Pilling can be prevented by following the care instructions for your sweater and ideally washing it on a gentle cycle. You should also avoid using fabric softener, as this forms a film on the fibres, causing them to detach from the clothing more quickly and lead to the aforementioned pilling. In addition, you should only air dry your sweaters and avoid the stressful dryer. This can deform your clothes and lead to increased pilling.

If you already have problems with countless pilling knots, we recommend buying a special lint brush or a lint shaver. These will gently remove the pilling from your clothes without damaging the fibres and stitches. Avoid picking the knots off with your fingers or even cutting them off with scissors, as this will damage the material of your sweater and, in the worst case, lead to holes.

Different styles with your sweaters for women

Whether it's spring, fall or an icy winter - with a women sweater, you're well-equipped for every season. Because your sweater not only keeps you warm, but is also universally applicable. Whether for men or women - you can't go wrong with a pretty sweater! Firstly: whether it's a turtleneck sweater, knitted sweater or even a V-neck sweater - every sweater is equally suitable for modern styles. Oversized sweaters in particular have been the absolute must-have of every season for some time now.

For a timeless look, simply combine a sweater of your choice with a pair of jeans. Whether flared, skinny or baggy, any jeans are a good choice here. Together with a simple coat and chic ankle boots, you'll have a look that's suitable for every day in no time at all. Combining a thin, plain sweater with a colourful vest or cardigan is also always a safe choice and creates a cosy look suitable for everyday wear. If you want to style your sweater a little more chic, we recommend a turtleneck sweater, elegant fabric trousers and a blazer.

No matter if it is for the working day at your company, a coffee with your besties or simply a relaxed day at home - with a sweater, you are always properly dressed and always cut a good figure. And as a small addition: for a particularly modern look, we recommend layering and layering looks. This involves dressing according to the onion principle. A sweater, matching shirt and a smart coat combined with fine fabric trousers or jeans create a modern look for men and women.

Washing your sweater properly: How to do it

Knitwear, cardigans and sweaters are not always easy to care for - but the right care is essential to ensure that your clothing lasts as long as possible. However, the right care depends heavily on your material. Therefore, always pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions on the washing label. We'll tell you what generally applies in the following section.

Hand wash

• Fill a sink or bowl with cold water.

• Add a small amount of wool detergent or another mild detergent to the water.

• Immerse the sweater and gently massage it to work the detergent into the fibres.

• Leave the sweater to soak for about 10 to 15 minutes.

• Rinse the sweater thoroughly with cold water until all soap residue is removed.

• Note: Some washing machines have a hand wash program, which can also be used for delicate sweaters.

Machine wash

• For less delicate materials, you can wash your sweaters in the washing machine as usual, using warm or cold water, depending on the manufacturer's instructions.

• Choose a mild detergent for your sweater.

• Turn the sweater inside out to minimize wear and pilling.

Drying

• Sweaters can be tumble dried on a low heat, but air drying is always gentler on various materials

• Hang the sweater up or lay it on a flat surface to dry.

• The following applies to handwashing and delicate materials: lay your sweater flat on a towel, roll it up, gently squeeze the water out of the fabric, then roll the towel up again and leave the sweater spread out flat on the towel to dry.
