Interview: Pau Capell talks about trail running poles

Pau Capell is a real star in the trail running business. The fact that he made it this far is more or les coincidence. In 2012 Pau Capell seriously injured his knee while playing football. At the recommendation of his doctor, Pau started to train in the mountains to restore muscles, ligaments and tendons. This quickly developed into a passion that continues to this day. Pau started the Ultra Trail World Tour in 2016 with a lot of ambition, sweat and joy of movement and immediately finished third. From this point at the latest, Pau had reached the top of the world. In the following interview you will find out why Pau does not want to miss his running poles. Furthermore Pau talks what is important when running with trail running poles.

What is the last hour before a race like for you?

Pau Capell:
The last hour is different than usual. I am nervous and excited. You train many hours before a race and know that now you only have that one opportunity to reward yourself for all your efforts. I like to listen to music and have a personal Spotify playlist. My taste in music is different, I listen to very different styles of music.

Are there other trail running athletes that inspire you?

Pau Capell:
Every athlete is an inspiration. But what inspires me most is the people at home, my family and friends.

Which trail is your favorite trail running route?

Pau Capell:
I don’t have a favorite route at all. As soon as I find a mountain, I can enjoy the route.

What must a route be like (length, height, etc.) so that poles are essential for the equipment?

Pau Capell:
I use the poles in all Ultratrail races. On climbs, but sometimes in flat passages when the race is long. The sticks reduce the force exerted on the legs, and the legs feel stronger towards the end of the race.

What is the advantage of poles for trail running?

Pau Capell:
The advantages of the sticks are many and different. The biggest plus is that the legs are relieved and you feel significantly fresher towards the end of the race.

What do you advise other athletes who want to run with poles for the first time?

Pau Capell:
My advice is to first learn how to use sticks correctly. Every detail is important – especially the position and the movement. When used correctly, poles are indispensable for trail running.
