WIR DENKEN UM Day 2021

Anyone who knows our Sport Conrad team knows that we like to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in. That’s why we get together every year for our action day for all our colleagues from shops, logistics and administration. Why? Because WIR DENKEN UM is not just an empty phrase, but we are committed to our earth and want to keep our homeland worth living in.

Mission in the Ammergau Alps

3 projects. 55 adults. 10 children. 2 dogs. 2 rangers and 3 forest workers. Countless trees, old branches, hundreds of metres of wildlife fence and many bags of collected rubbish – that is the short balance of our WIR DENKEN UM Day on 26 September 2021. But you can also read about all this in more detail: On the last Sunday in September, we started our outreaches in three groups together with the Naturpark Ammergauer Alpen, the Laber-Bergbahn and our sponsoring partner Salewa.

Project 1: Dismantling of a game fence on the Kuchelberg. A small team of 6 consisting of our “wild ones” started in the early morning hours towards the Kuchelberg summit and toiled in a very exposed area. Under the guidance of Ranger Thomas and forestry staff, a hundreds of metres long game fence was dismantled, rolled up and prepared for removal. A small challenge: the terrain away from the hiking trails is very steep and exposed. Years ago, the game fence was erected in this area to protect freshly reforested trees from being bitten by game. Now that these trees have grown large, the fence is superfluous and nature must be restored to its pristine state.

Project 2: Brush clearance at Ettal Monastery. Around 20 employees plus family members tackled an alpine meadow with a forest edge near the monastery with enthusiasm and energy. Over the last few years, this green area had been lying fallow, old and rotten wood had accumulated, bushes and vines were growing wild. Together with ranger Deniz and a farmer, the area was tidied up: old wood had to be collected, smaller trees sawed off and larger pieces of tree chopped up – and prepared for further use. The felled trees and bushes will be reused in the form of wood chips. But why cut down trees when reforestation and climate protection are so important? Quite simply: to provide wildflowers and insects with more habitat and to curb wild growth.

Project 3: Clean-up on the Laber. Another 20 employees, equipped with barbecue grills and rubbish tongs, made their way over the Schartenköpfe to the Laber summit. Besides the summit, the aim was to collect as much rubbish as possible. And in the end, quite a lot came together: especially handkerchiefs, pieces of food packaging, masks and countless small parts.

After the work was done, everyone was given a snack, drinks and a small goodie of drinking bottles from Salewa and Unlitter sets for collecting rubbish. A big thank you for the support goes to: Salewa, the Ammergau Alps Nature Park, the Laber Bahn, the Aurhammer Bakery, the Ettal Monastery and to our colleagues and family members. Thank you for your commitment – and see you next year!
