Northern Playground: An Idea becomes a SUCCESS STORY
The friends Jo and Magnus from Norway, who are outside in all weather conditions, know that problem very well. And have decided to do something about it. They did not want to ruin their special moments in nature with wet basic clothing. They were looking for something that could be easily put on and off. Something like functional underwear with a zipper.
With the help of an old sewing machine and some tutorials on YouTube, the boys got down to work. They taught themselves sewing and tried different constructions. The first Zipbody® and Ziplongs® were born on a cold winter night in 2011. So you also could say that the brand Northern Playground was born. Northern Playground is program – because Norway is the most beautiful playground in the world for Jo and Magnus.
The two Norwegians tried their invention the next weekend – and were thrilled. More and more friends who tested the Zipwear ™, asked immediately for supplies. Since then a lot has happened. Northern Playground’s Zipwear ™ enjoyed increasing demand. Because the benefits of Zipwear ™ are simply obvious. The first wool collection came on the market in 2013 and in 2015 the young company was finalist ISPO Brand New and Winner of German Design Awards. And that are just a few awards that followed.
HOW DOES THE ZIPWEAR ™ FROM NORTHERN PLAYGROUND WORK?
It’s really not that hard. You simply zip the clothes on and off. If you are sweaty after your mountain tour, you can easily take off, or put on, the Zipbody®, the Zipneck®, the Ziplongs® baselayer pants or the Zipbra® with the help of the attached zippers. However, you want. The most important thing is that your body stays dry and you don’t cool down. Actually a pretty simple idea… Simple and ingenious. All details are perfect.
An idea that has revolutionized the world of functional underwear. Incidentally, the zippers do not interfere with wear because they are padded. You do not really feel them at all. How intelligent is that?
The materials that Northern Playground uses in its production are quite intelligent too. In its first season, the Ziplongs® consisted of two different types of Polartec textiles. From the Ziplongs® Active (which expired after two seasons) emerged the Ziplongs® microfleece.
The products now consist of a wool mixture – with a large amount of organic merino wool and with microfleece. This guarantees that the Ziplongs®, the Zipbra® or the Zipbody® are comfortable, elastic and supple while at the same time regulating moisture and regulating the temperature. The Northern Playground products have been produced in Europe so far. The organic merino wool, for example, is produced in Lithuania and sewed there. But the big dream of Northern Playground was always to build a production in Oslo. With the project “MADE IN TØYEN, OSLO” this dream has come a little closer. A sewing facility was set up there that offers unemployed women in the region a chance.
