Ortovox Peak Light review

Review Ortovox Peak Light 30 S

More comfort with wool: For the 2023 summer season, the Taufkirchen-based mountaineering brand Ortovox has completely redesigned its Peak high-touring backpack range. The most important detail of the new models: A woollen fleece made from 80 percent SWISSWOOL ensures comfortable wear. This is ideal for mountaineers: inside on long tours at high altitude, when it is still cold in the early morning and gets hotter as the day progresses. Wool has the advantage of warming you up when it’s cold and cooling you down when it’s hot – your personal air conditioner. Tests have shown that Ortovox’s SWISSWOOL HYBRID BACK SYSTEM wicks thirty times better and can absorb twenty times more moisture than standard EVA back systems. As a result, the backpack always feels pleasantly dry.

The Ortovox Peak Light 30 S is made for demanding alpine tours where every gram counts. By removing the hip belt, lid, back reinforcement, ice axe holder and D-Skifix, this no-frills pack can be made 30 percent lighter. The environmental credentials are also impressive: The pack is made largely from recycled polyamide, is carbon-neutral and requires no harmful PFC treatment.

The personal test result of our mountaineering expert Flo from the Sport Conrad store in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Thanks to the wide hip belt and padded shoulder straps, the Peak Light 30 S is very comfortable to carry. The backpack can be adjusted with different straps and fits well on your back, whether you want to wear it loosely or tightly on your back. The new SWISSWOOL fleece back system is very comfortable: on hot days, I sweat much less than with other backpacks.

Despite the weight-oriented design, the backpack has all the important details. The Ortovox Peak Light has everything you need to call it an all-rounder. The ice axe holder on the hip belt and the water-repellent outer material make it suitable for high alpine tours, while the helmet and probe holder as well as the shovel compartment make it a reliable companion on ski tours. Rope attachment loops on the outside of the pack and its lightweight make it suitable for climbing, while the hydration bladder holder and pole attachment make it a hiking pack.

Ideal if you want to reduce weight for demanding trips: the removal of the hip belt and other parts has made the pack much lighter. As a mountaineer, you have all the options, depending on what you want to do! In short, the Peak Light 30 S is the Swiss army knife of backpacks.

Pros:

Versatile and lightweight; even if you don’t pack a lot, you don’t have to carry a lot.

Cons:

Stick holder rattles when going downhill; Removing items is sometimes a bit tricky.
