The new Salewa Pedroc PTX promises to be the perfect companion for fast mountain tours, now known as speed hiking. As an enthusiastic speed hiker – I’m afraid you can’t call it trail running yet – I had the opportunity to test the performance of the shoe in a variety of conditions on the mountain.

Test scenarios
I spent over two months testing the Salewa Pedroc PTX on a variety of hikes in the Ammergau Alps. From muddy forest paths, rooty climbs, rocky summit trails to forest roads, everything was there. Conditions ranged from dry summer days to very muddy and rainy mountain days.
First impressions
My first impression when I unpacked the Salewa Pedroc PTX was positive. The minimalist design in a beautiful, simple blue immediately catches the eye. Particularly noteworthy is the low weight of 345 grams per shoe, which was immediately noticeable when trying on the Pedroc PTX for the first time. It was also immediately comfortable to wear.
I also noticed the rugged ripstop mesh upper and the TPU side panels, which look tough and protect against debris. The tread of the Pomoca Speed Hiker Pro outsole also impressed me at first glance. Overall, the workmanship and design of the Pedroc PTX meet my requirements for a speed hiking shoe. I chose my normal shoe size (43) and found that the shoe fitted well straight away. I therefore did not use the included Salewa MFF Multi-Fit footbed for further adjustment.
Another thing that immediately caught my eye was the ‘Salewa Committed’ symbol on the shoe. Salewa uses this symbol to identify products that are manufactured under controlled environmental and social standards that are verified by a third party. How the Pedroc PTX performed on the mountain
On the mountain, the Pedroc PTX performs very well, from easy terrain to challenging summit routes. I was impressed by the stable support combined with the freedom of movement in the shoe, despite its light weight. Like the first time I tried them on, I felt comfortable on the mountain, whatever the surface.
Despite the tight lacing in the midfoot area, which is primarily responsible for the good fit, the toes had plenty of room to manoeuvre. This is particularly noticeable when walking downhill. The protective effect of the ripstop upper and TPU side panels held up on the mountain, as promised in the unboxing, and the Salewa Pedroc PTX can handle debris. However, the Pomoca sole did show slight weaknesses when wet or on particularly loose surfaces. The occasional loss of grip was therefore unavoidable.
Strengths of the Salewa Pedroc PTX
In my opinion, the main strengths of the Salewa Pedroc PTX are its good fit, very low weight and excellent protection against debris. The Salewa Pedroc PTX is a real speed hiking boot: It combines the lightness and stability essential for speed hiking. The shoe is suitable for medium to long distances and is the perfect companion for anyone who likes to move quickly in the mountains.
