Commitment to sustainability and social fairness – there are good reasons why outdoor sports brands are increasingly focusing on a more environmentally friendly product range and adherence to social standards in production. But what exactly does this mean? We took a closer look at the Salewa Committed label. In this blog post, we will briefly explain the criteria that make up the Salewa Committed label.
The criteria
The South Tyrolean mountain sports brand Salewa uses the Committed symbol to identify products that meet high internal sustainability and social standards. The Salewa team is aware that the brand still has a long way to go and that the process of optimisation is never over. The Committed label aims to give Salewa fans the opportunity to check what they are buying.
A Salewa product will only carry the Committed label if it meets the mandatory criteria and at least one additional criterion:
Mandatory criteria – both need to be met:
1. chemically tested:
More than 90% by weight of the product meets at least one of the following criteria:
- The main material (or the entire product) has been chemically tested externally according to the Oberalp’s chemical policy
- bluesign® certification of the main material
2. Controlled social standards in production:
The production site where the product is manufactured has been externally audited for compliance with social standards and appropriate working conditions. Such an audit is valid for 3 years. If the last audit is more than 3 years ago, the criterion is considered not met.
Additional criteria – at least one needs to be met:
1. PFC-free
This criterion only applies to garments with a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) finish. All garment materials must be PFC-free.
2. Upcycling
The product contains at least 50% by weight of upcycled materials.
3. Recycled content
The product contains at least 50% by weight of recycled material.
4. Responsibly sourced down
All down used in the product is certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS).
5. Natural/renewable materials
The product consists of at least 50% by weight of one or a combination of the following materials: Viscose (VI), Wool (WO) – TirolWool® or certified non-mulesed wool, Tencel® (CTY), Linen (LI), Hemp (CA), Cotton (CO).
