Epic Mountainbike Trails in Slovenia

Nomads normally move from place to place.

But Dixi and his son Anej from the Bikenomad team have become sedentary and found their own bike paradise in Jamnica in Slovenia. The Flow Valley Crew came for a visit.

Trailpark + Mountainbike Hotel Koros

Dixi is one of the first mountain bike pioneers in Slovenia. In 1995 he owned the first mountain bike hotel in Slovenia in the city Crna. But he dreamt of more and had a vision. In 2008 he bought a bio farm named Koros above Jamnica and rebuilt it into an eco-hotel, which is specialized for mountain bikers. He also bought grazing lands and forests. This way his vision became more and more real.

With his own hands he built a single trail park on his land. 24 km long trails meander along the farm in different levels. The trails are made by hand by 100 percent, and lead you through fairy-tail-forests, on the soft, rooty and earthy ground to endless blueberry fields. The trail part is clearly signposted, all routes are connected with each other. The trail map categorizes all the trails in blue, red and black. In the trail park there is no shuttle service, it’s against Dixis philosophy.

On the uphills, you drive mostly on forest roads, but there is an uphill trail too, which was createspecifically. This way, the route network offers ideal conditions for the E-bike generation. Everybody will find what he is looking for. Trail beginners and endurists will be happy.

Anje is a passionate guide member of the Slovenian Mountainbike educational team. With his guide team he offers riding techniques courses, courses in “how to build a trail” and of course guided tours.

Everybody, who is staying at the bike-hotel of the family Strucl forgets about the daily worries in one minute. The estate is so quiet and idyllic, framed from a flowering mountain pasture. The warmth and hospitality of the whole Bikenomad team just make you feel good. Self-produced products from the farm and the garden are on the table for breakfast and dinner. Delicious marmalades, self-smoked sausages and fresh vegetables are on the menu. Dixis wife cooks delicious local specialties. The whole family is serving the meals for dinner.

95 percent of his guests are mountain bikers, says Dixie proudly. Bikers from 48 nations stayed at the quaint Bikehotel so far. No wonder. Its a hotel from mountain bikers for mountain bikers. We’ll come back soon for sure.

Black Hole Trail – BIKING UNDERGROUND

Since the 18th April Slovenia has one more mountain bike attraction. Der Black Hole trail in Jamnica is a technical single trail in an abandoned mine. You can find everything about underground biking on the Bikenomad website. Until 1994 lead and zinc were mined. Now Anej has shaped with his friends a rocky trail with 150 meters deep into the mine. A trail-adventure that is second to none. When you cycle the first metres between the tracks in a dark mine, you have queasy feelings first. The pitch-dark, of the helmet lamp and Anejs rear wheel lead us the way to the entrance of the trail. And then things get real immediately.

The trail is narrow, steep and sometimes slippery. You must be fully consented and must approve with a very good biking-technique. That’s why the guided tour always has 2 runs. On the first run Anej is showing you the more difficult parts and gives you some tips. On the second run you can ride flowigly withouth too many stops. Claustrophobia is misplaced here. Sometimes you have to move your head, so your helmet won’t get stuck on the rockface. The acoustics in the mine shoots adrenaline into the veins too, before you pass the mine after 5 kilometres.

The Key Data for the Black Hole Trail:

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Prize: 50 EUR p. person; min. 4 persons
  • Incl. guiding
  • Incl. helmet light
  • Incl. shuttle

Trails on the petzen

The cross region between Kärnten and Slovenia is also well known for trails at the Petzen. The own shuttle of the Bikenomads brings you there. The trails are on the Austrian side.

Flow Country Trail

The Flow Country trail on the  Petzen is 11 km long, so it’s one of the longest flow trails in Europe. In 2014 the trail was prized from the International Mountainbike Bicycling Association (IMBA) as best Flow Trail.

The cabin ground brings you effortless to the entry of the trail. You’ll have fun from the first second. The mountain bike legend Diddie Schneider built a masterpiece of FLOW.

Countless tables and steep curves are waiting on this with Makadam-gravel fixed trail, which meander along with a gradient of 10 percent above the Südkärntner Hausberg into the valley. Along the road are places to rest and evasive options; so slower and faster cycler won’t get in each others way. Who doesn’t have a big smile on his face after the ride, didn’t get FLOW.
Three Cross Country roads branch off and lead you to the main route.

On the bottom station of the cable railway, there is a bike-shop. You can get your whole equipment there, as well as small repairs on your bike are possible. In the bike-shop there is a wash station as well.

In the valley, there is an exciting exercise parcour waiting for you.

Petzen Thriller

Since summer 2016 there is another trail on the Petzen. As the name „Thriller“ is saying, it’s one for freerider. What else could it be with 7 km length. Anej Strucl made a challenging trail with steep root passages and small leaps. It’s like a natural trail in the alps. The perfect counterpart to a Flow Contry tail. On the Petzen it never gets boring.
