Trail comfort meets everyday suitability – the Salomon Ultra Glide 3 trail running shoe put to the test

With the Ultra Glide 3 trail running shoe, Salomon promises: ‘It’s easier than ever to become a runner’s high!’. We wanted to discover more about this and equipped our internal ZUT team with the shoe. Our colleague Christian starts at the ZUT on the Mittenwald Trail and has summarised his impressions of the shoe for us.

For Christian, trail running is more than just sport – it’s a way of getting to know yourself again and again, testing your own limits and immersing yourself in the tranquillity of nature. Three times a week he is out and about on the trails around Garmisch, mostly on runnable paths, sometimes also with a pushchair on road runs or with an all-terrain pushchair on the Kramerplateuweg or up towards the Tannenhütte – an easy trail that is well suited for uphill training and strength building in conjunction with pushchairs. At the ZUT, he starts on the Mittenwald Trail over 44 kilometres and wants to beat his personal best time from last year. During training and his first competitions, he took to the trails with the Salomon Ultra Glide 3. We asked him what the shoe can do and who it is suitable for.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE ULTRA GLIDE 3

When trying on the Salomon Ultra Glide 3 for the first time, the shoe initially seemed a little bulky, says Christian. But after the second running session, this impression had already disappeared: “It fits very snugly, enclosing the foot comfortably without pinching. It fits perfectly, especially in the heel – and the mesh upper material provides enough space in the toe box.”

Practical test on the trail

The shoe was tested on local trails around Garmisch and at a real highlight: the Innsbruck Alpine Trail Festival 2025 (K35) – 37 kilometres, 2,100 metres in altitude, flowing single trails, challenging forest roads and technical passages. ‘The grip uphill was excellent, and the sole with its indentations gripped reliably downhill – even on wet ground,’ says Christian. In technical sections, the shoe held up well, although Christian would like a little more protection in the toe area: ‘You can sometimes bump into roots or stones.’

Comfort & cushioning

He was particularly impressed by the cushioning: “A dream! At the IATF, I was even able to put them on again at the end – despite the length.” The comfort on long runs was also impeccable: no pressure, no friction, no blisters.

Grip & weather resistance

“On wet surfaces, I would give the grip an 8 out of 10 – some slipping is normal, but overall very stable.” And in the heat? “The breathable upper material ensures good ventilation. However, you quickly get wet in the shoe when it rains.”

Quicklace, sole & material

A big plus: the Salomon Quicklace™ system – no annoying strap opening on the downhill. The revised sole with its small indentations also impressed us with its excellent traction. One small point of criticism remains with the upper material: “Although it adapts perfectly to the foot, it is quite susceptible to damage in the event of a fall.”

Test summary of the Salomon Ultra Glide 3 Trail Running Shoe

Christian sums it up in a few words:

“The Salomon Ultra Glide 3 is a real all-rounder – comfortable, versatile and with good grip. Perfect for beginners and advanced runners looking for a shoe with a precise fit and strong cushioning.”
