Gear review S/Lab Sense 8 SG

The weather is fine, why not try a new trail running shoe?! That’s what Mirko Schohn, running expert at the Sport Conrad branch in Wielenbach, thought and approached the “fast red” of S/Lab with great respect.

first impression:

The first sight of this shoe scared me a bit. I must be able to run pretty fast in the mountains to do justice to this device. It looks extremely aggressive not only because of its colouring, also because of the sole profile. The workmanship of the Sense 8 SG from S/Lab makes a very high-quality impression. The weight of the pair of shoes is feather-light 473 grams.

First fitting:

Putting the Sense 8 SG on involves some effort. As soon as I managed to slip through the very tight shaft of this racer, it felt like a second skin. The shoe is closed with the tried and tested Quiklace system.

Running characteristics:

With its low weight, the S/Lab Sense 8 SG is characterized by extremely direct and agile running characteristics. This shoe primarily wants to be run fast, and preferably uphill. The cushioning is minimalistic, but still sufficient for longer runs where every minute counts. But it also makes a comfortable impression on longer tours.

The high, close-fitting upper ensures that not a single grain gets lost in the shoe while running, which could disturb the peace of running. The profile of the Sense 8 SG – SG stands for Soft Ground – is ideal for soft and deep ground. It clearly shows its strengths in this terrain.

On dry ground it works solidly and does what it is supposed to do: Get the runner quickly from A to B. When moisture comes into play, the weaknesses of the trail running shoe become apparent. Then stones turn into slippery plates. Which in my opinion leads to the fact that you can only run very carefully, because you could lose your grip at any time. On the trails around the Schnalz, after heavy rainfalls, the shoe was running very well. In the muddy terrain the studs dig deep into the ground and give great traction.

Results:

The Salomon S/Lab Sense 8 SG trail runng shoe is an excellent racing shoe for soft and muddy surfaces. It also performs solidly on firm, stony ground. However, the wear and tear is quite high.

Pro:

Traction on soft underground
Direct agile running characteristics
Tight precise fit

Contra:

Dressing a little tedious
Slippery on damp stones and roots
