Summer is coming and with it, the mountain biking season really gets going. Norrøna has developed bike shorts that are designed to withstand all adversities. Our Ambassador Adrian Greiter has put the Fjørå Flex Heavy Duty Shorts through their paces.

The first impression
A pair of shorts like a suit of armor! That’s the impression the Fjørå Flex Heavy Duty Shorts give you as soon as you pick them up, and the feeling continues when you put them on! These knee-length bike shorts are the most durable in Norrøna’s mountain bike collection. The company itself describes them as “bombproof” on their home page and indeed, even the heaviest impacts should cause the shorts significantly less grief than the rider inside!
The nylon material isn’t only super robust, but also surprisingly comfortable to wear. This is due to the elastane stretch content, which ensures that the shorts do not restrict freedom of movement in any way. And even against light rain, the wearer is well-equipped thanks to the impregnation!
But the shorts are also equipped with numerous other thoughtful details that make biker life more pleasant:
The Velcro straps at the waist of the rather slim Fjørå Flex allow reliable and precise width adjustment of the waistband, which closes with two press studs. The back of the waistband is also cut significantly higher, so that there is no gap between the shirt and the trousers that could cause discomfort, even on steep climbs.

And so that it doesn’t slip even on the roughest trail, the designers at Norrøna have given the Fjøra an all-around silicone strip on the inside of the waistband.
The shorts also offer plenty of storage space: in addition to two “normal” trouser pockets, they also have two generously sized pockets on the thigh, one of which has an extra mobile phone pocket, while the other conceals a clip-off glasses cleaning cloth. And to ensure that the contents of the bag don’t get lost on the way, all four pockets can be closed with color-contrasting zips.

One thing you have to be aware of is that Heavy Duty is exactly that: quite “heavy”, i.e. heavy and also quite warm! Even the continuous side ventilation zips can only change this to a limited extent! On warm summer days, the shorts will bring a few extra drops of sweat to your forehead, as long as you’re riding up the mountain yourself and not just being shuttled to the top in the bike park.
Speaking of bike parks, the zips on the side of the trousers allow them to be stretched so that they fall smoothly over any knee protector, no matter how thick it is.
Resume
In conclusion – and this has become a very important point in my purchasing decisions – the durability of the “Fjørå Flex Heavy Duty Shorts” will be as long as its name, which means that the shorts are not only made from recycled material but are also designed to be very sustainable. Ultimately, the repair service that Norrøna offers for all its products also contributes to this and has already given new life to many broken garments. So if you’re looking for a pair of bike shorts that are robust, practical, and sustainable – and also look good – you’ve definitely found a suitable candidate in the Norrøna Fjørå Flex Heavy Duty Shorts!
