The Norrøna falketind Octa jacket is an insulation jacket with low weight and excellent breathability. It is suitable for many types of mountain sports and for every season. Our ambassador Valentin Rapp tested the jacket for us.
The Octa lining by Norrona provides excellent insulation even when wet and dries very quickly thanks to its construction and multi-channel fibers. The jacket is made from a recycled Pertex outer material that is very wind-resistant and also water repellent enough for a small shower. There is a stretch material built into the sides of the jacket for a super fit and comfortable feel. The jacket has a tight but comfortable collar that protects well in the wind, but no hood. Two large pockets offer enough space for a mobile phone, wallet, or a few bars. There are thumb loops at the ends of the sleeves if you want to keep your wrists warm.
First Impression
Thanks to the flexible side panels, the Falketind Octa jacket hugs the body perfectly, regardless of whether you are wearing just a shirt or several layers underneath. The sewn-in lining lies well on the skin and immediately makes a pleasantly warming impression. Personally, I’m also a fan of hoods for insulation jackets, as they replace the hardshell in good weather and offer more warmth on the head in windy conditions. Then you’ll probably have to take a hat with you in your rucksack. The outer material is a separate, very thin layer that is not connected to the layers underneath. I immediately had the thought: don’t get caught on the rock or you’ll have a hole in your jacket. Pleasant: The outer material is somewhat elastic, I also like the matt look. The sleeves are rather tight, but the elastic inserts make them fit perfectly.
On Tour
To test the jacket thoroughly, I take it along to a Highline project where we want to combine mountain biking, hiking, climbing, and slacklining. The backpacks are packed, of course far too heavy as usual, and we set off from Rottach-Egern in the direction of Daffenstein. After the first few meters, my forehead starts to sweat, because the jacket is simply much too warm for the climb that day. No problem, it can be rolled up very small and still finds room in my overstuffed rucksack.
At the top, as so often on the mountain, it is slightly windy. There is a mix of sun and clouds all day. So I put on a fresh shirt and jacket and immediately I’m warm again. For the next few hours, I either sit on the summit in the wind, climb or run over the Highline and don’t have to think for a second about what clothes I’m wearing or whether I’m too warm or too cold. The jacket regulates the temperature so well that I don’t even notice it. The only negative thing is that my first impression of the thin outer material confirms my thoughts: A small careless moment is enough and I have a small hole in my sleeve from a rock edge. Even on the descent with the mountain bike, the jacket shows how windproof it is and I am wonderfully warm, even though the sun is already setting.
Resume
It’s hard to say more than that the jacket delivers what it promises. It’s warm, but still breathable enough that the heat doesn’t build up and offers enough protection against wind and weather unless it rains for several hours. I also like the fact that Norrøna attaches great importance to sustainability in the jacket. This is shown, for example, by the use of recycled material and the Bluesign certificate. The jacket can be used for everything from hiking to ski touring. The jacket is light and the pack size is small enough to always take it with you in your backpack.
