Adidas Terrex has brought a real all-rounder onto the market with the SWIFT R3 GTX approach shoe. Trails, via ferratas, streams and much more are supposedly no problem for this all-rounder. In order to get a feel for this promise, our colleague Lisa Klinger was allowed to test the shoe. You can read about how the test turned out here.
First Impression
When the shoe arrived, the first thing I noticed was the simple design, which is anything but boring. That’s the first plus point, because flashy, colourful and garish shoes aren’t my favorite. But that is probably a matter of opinion. In addition, the shoe seems very robust and stable and is waterproof thanks to the Gore Tex membrane.
Even at the first fitting, the approach shoe from Adidas can convince. The shoe sits firmly on the foot and yet is super light and comfortable to wear. The wearing comfort is significantly higher than with my high-cut hiking shoe. I didn’t get any blisters or unpleasant pressure points during the entire test phase.
Something else that needs to be said and which I am personally very pleased about: the Adidas Terrex SWIFT R3 GTX is made from recycled material. 20% of the parts used to make the upper are made from at least 50% recycled material.
On Tour with the SWIFT R3 GTX
I tested the approach shoes in our local mountains at Kochelsee, Bavaria. I was particularly impressed by the grip of the sole. Even in the steeper sections, I didn’t slip once. The Continental Rubber outsole does exactly what it should! Of course, I also took one or other march through the water to put the water resistance through its paces. Here, too, the Gore Tex membrane does its job and doesn’t let any water through.
Due to of the simple look, it didn’t bother me to keep the shoe on for shopping afterwards. I also wore the shoe on horseback some of the time. It’s simply super comfortable and a great companion for all outdoor activities.
If you want to find a negative aspect about the shoe, then in my eyes it would be the thin laces that loosen a bit when worn for a long time, so I had to retie them once or twice. However, I was able to solve the problem with a double knot. A plus point is the length of the laces, as they are not too long and therefore do not dangle around and disturb.
If the shoe gets dirty, it can be cleaned quite easily with a brush and some water. For the Gore Tex material, it is better not to use a washing machine. For longer durability, I prefer to rely on hand cleaning
Resume
I can recommend the shoe with a clear conscience and will therefore continue to use it myself. Especially for hikes and smaller mountain tours, it is perfect. It sits stably on the foot and is still light and comfortable. So if you can or want to do without the higher shaft of a hiking boot on tour, the Adidas Terrex SWIFT R3 GTX is a good choice. According to Adidas Terrex, it is also suitable for via ferrata. I didn’t check this in my test, but I will definitely do so.
