Bern Hassmann, who is currently living in Munich, started his bike career pretty early we would say. As a 3-year-old he encountered biking for the first time. After he grew up from his training wheels, there was no-one who could stop him. When he was around 11 he got his first “proper bike” a Wheeler fully made in 1994, which became his companion on adventures through the woods and meadows. And how did he join the Flow Valley guys? His girlfriend took him on a ride where he met Robert and Berny for the first time. And the evening after the ride, it was pretty clear that this is just a beginning, the chemistry between the guys was great. “Mountains, bikes & photography – it all just clicked together!“

Tell me, what does it mean to be a part of the Flow Valley for you?
It’s just so much fun, to venture out on the trails with the guys and explore mountains on the bike. And of course where there are some great photos or videos being made, that is just the cherry on top [Bernd is laughing…]
Competitions are not your thing right? Is there some reason behind it?
It’s pretty simple: I just enjoy to ride my bike in a great company of my friends without any pressure. Fore sure, races have their own meaning, and it is a challenge for sure, but the pressure and competitiveness belongs with it. For me, the biggest challenge is to know how to work with the mountain and work it well – but that just don’t work for me when I’m under pressure.
So you like to travel – you, your bike and your crew on the road?
Oh yeah, I can never say no to a good trip. One of my favorite trips was just a couple of weeks ago, we went with the guys to Slovenia and rode the trails around Kranjska Gora – the mountain landscape there was just breathtaking! Apart from that, I have been around in Austria, Switzerland and Italy a lot – but there is still so much more to explore.
What is still on your “to-do” list?
I still have so many projects in my head. One of the top ideas is to take my bike and go for a tour on the Zugspitze 😉
The good ol’ Zugspitze!! Are you riding a lot around Germany’s highest mountain?
Relatively… my favorite area is Karwendel for sure. So that is pretty much just around the corner.
What can’t miss on your tour?
Spetzi (spetzi is a mixture of coke and orange pop, typical for Southern Germany) on a top of the mountain and a proper brotzeit (Bavarian way to make snacks with bread, salami or cheese) !!!!
