Fair Wear Foundation: What is behind it?

The Fair Wear Foundation is an organization that works with clothing brands and textile workers to improve working conditions in factories. It only works with companies that are willing to take a fair path to produce their clothes and has over 80 member companies representing more than 130 clothing brands from ten European countries. The companies of the Fair Wear Foundation committ themselves to implement the Foundation’s labor standards.

The eight labor standards of the Fair Wear Foundation are:

  • Free choice of workplace
  • No discrimination in employment
  • No exploitative child labor
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • Limitation of working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally binding employment contract

The foundation regularly reviews, evaluates and publicly reports on the progress of member companies, carries out on-site inspections of production facilities and interviews workers. It also reviews the companies’ business practices and their impact on working conditions in the production facilities. The Fair Wear Foundation also works with other organizations, unions, NGOs, business associations and governments to support a sustainable system of good working conditions.

Partners of the Fair Wear Foundation include Deuter, Odlo, Ortovox, Schöffel, Dynafit, Salewa, Mountain Equipment, Mammut and Vaude
