Softshell jackets for skiing are a good option if you combine them with other layers. They have the advantage that they are slightly more breathable than hardshell ski jackets. However, they are not completely waterproof. If you are on the slopes (during dry weather conditions), their insulation combined with, for example, a fleece jacket underneath is perfectly adequate.
