Trail running: the best events in europe

Trail running has now conquered the whole of Europe and is a popular way to challenge your athletic performance, especially in the Alpine regions. More and more runners are finding the appeal of natural trails instead of tarmac roads or flat and dull paths.

The reason is simple: trail running gives you an absolute feeling of freedom! You are out and about in the mountains, running up and down hilly paths and enjoying pure nature. And for all trail runners who like to put their performance to the test, there are a variety of running events throughout Europe where you have to master long distances. Competitions not only motivate you to train, but also give you a goal to aim for and, ideally, a place on the podium.

Competitions increase your motivation

If you are preparing for a long and tough race, a good ranking is probably one of the best motivators. There are many reasons to train, but measuring your performance against other runners is a good reason to go through the agony of training.

Of course there are also trail runners who do this sport all by themselves and love being out in nature and in the mountains. But if you achieve a good result in a race and are satisfied with yourself, this motivates you to keep going and perhaps even attempt longer distances.

Every trail running event and every competition is different. It depends on the region, the weather and climate conditions and, of course, the trail. But don’t get the wrong idea, all competitions have one thing in common: they are tough and exhausting! Depending on the distance, altitude and duration, you can run distances of up to 100 kilometres.

The weather also plays an important role. Poor weather conditions can turn an easy trail run into a difficult competition mission. But that’s exactly the beauty of trail running, because no matter where you go, there are always new and challenging trails to discover.

Many events offer different trails that vary in terms of altitude and kilometres. Don’t worry if it’s an ‘ultra run’, as you can often choose shorter competition routes.

We have put together an overview for you, in which you can find trail running events throughout Europe. Whether in Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland or the Nordic countries: Training, Ready, Go!
