Sport Conrad Sustainability Day

Sport Conrad´s Sustainability Day

We all love nature. However, that very nature is endangered. For us to pass this livable and wonderful world on to our children and grandchildren, we´ll have to reconsider our way of life. Right here, right now. Sport Conrad has embarked on this journey this past summer, taking the first small steps. Yet we know that we´ve got a long and rocky road ahead of us. Still, it´s a path we want to follow and which is crucial to us.

Every journey starts with a first step

We´ve started this process by cleaning out our own closet: we´ve changed the entire lighting systems in all our stores to energy-saving LEDs. The photo shootings for our catalogue have stopped taking place in Iceland or Norway, since they now take place directly in our backyard. For this winter catalogue, for instance, we were doing business in the Mittenwald area. Our catalogue is printed in Germany´s most environmentally-friendly way. Print office, sheets, colors, and packaging foil have all been awarded with the environmental seal Blauer Engel – we don´t mind spending a little extra cash for a good cause!

A summer event in an environmental limelight

But reconsidering our way of doing business doesn´t stop there: our past summer festival was all about the issue of sustainability. We´ve headed toward Steingaden and actively participated in cleaning up the moor in the Premer Filz (a region). Moors are ecologically precious and home to many endangered species, which have almost been extinct in mundane woods. Furthermore, the are all kinds of animal experts in terms of living on very wet and nutrient-poor soils. The Spirke is one of them, a relative of the well-known dwarf pine from the mountains. Unfortunately, within the Premer Filz – as it´s the case with many other green areas – it has met some serious competition for space: the Norway spruce is on its heels. We basically owe this to ourselves: due to the human-made changes of many green areas, the spruce can grow faster than normal and thus prevents the Spirke from spreading.

However, a moor is supposed to breathe in order to stay alive. Just like we are. The task for all participating Sport Conrad employees: cutting the spruces in order to give the Spirken more light and to do something good for the water supply of the moor. Spruces are always thirsty, so: less spruces, more water for the Spirke and other species.

Relieving the moor´s breathing

So, Sport Conrad employees sweated like a dog for an entire day. The reward came when their work was done in the form of a nice little brunch.

The result was clear as day: a great day with co-workers and a small step for us all toward an environmentally-conscious future.
