Product review
Finnish sports watch manufacturer Suunto is enriching the market with a new fitness watch, the Suunto7. The first time you look at the watch, you notice the extremely high quality and solid workmanship of the sports watch. It looks a bit heavy, but for me this is an indication of high quality. Once the right setting has been found, it fits well and you hardly notice that you are wearing a large watch. The operating system of the watch is the Google Wear OS System. This makes the sports watch an extremely flexible Smartwatch. The Suunto7 is powered by a Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor. A heart rate sensor measures the pulse very reliably and accurately. For navigation and positioning, the manufacturers have used GPS, Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and Beidou what making it a very high-quality sports watch. During the test I had signal at all times. A barometric altimeter and an electronic compass certainly don’t leave the owner out in the rain. The display is 1.39 inch with a 454×454 pixel resolution. So the watch is perfectly readable even during sports. The brightness of the watch ensures that the information on the display is very easy to read even in direct sunlight. The first use of Suunto7 gives me confidence in its handling. I never once had the feeling of being overwhelmed. In addition, Suunto7 guided me through its menu, and with the help of a step-by-step guide, everything important could be set in no time at all. I learned to quickly master the extensive range of settings.
In sports, using Suunto7 was easy for me, although I don’t know much about smartphones and electronic devices. It was no problem to record the workouts, no matter what was on the schedule. Cycling; running, trail running etc. can be set up in a self-explanatory way. The settings and the different menus can be operated via touch display. When the going gets tough, the four push buttons serve as controls. Connections to my other training platforms (Strava etc.) could be established easily. Another extremely helpful feature is that Suunto7 automatically downloads the current map of the region free of charge. This made it easy for me to find my way around and to find my way even in unknown places. What bothered me a little was the battery life.
During activities the battery life was about 8-10 hours. But I used all possible functions. The staying power can be extended up to 48 hours. The charging works super fast in under 2 hours. The display and the protective glass made of polyamide and gorilla glass withstood a massive fall during trail running and showed no scratches or damage. I only made limited use of the Suunto7’s Smartwatch functions. I used the message function, which worked smoothly. Furthermore it is possible to access the Google Playstore through the Google Wear OS system and download all kinds of apps. This was also no problem for me and I had access to Spotify which allowed me to play music via Smartwatch.
Conclusion:
The Suunto7 is able to combine a modern sports watch and a hip Smartwatch in one. At the same time it offers a multitude of fitness and smart functions.
