What if you also had the chance to keep your savings? Sounds intriguing? Well, then have a look at our Ammergau Alps Nature Park sweepstakes.

The Ammergau Alps NATURE PARK- a unique kind of scenery

The Ammergau Alps Nature Park is a nature park with an unrivaled cultural landscape, in which you can engage in countless trips, hikes and guided tours. The park, which measures 227 square kilometers, offers woods, rivers, meadows, moors and mountains. This is the perfect mixture for an exciting activity holiday, featuring the Ammerdurchbruch (corresponds to the Ammer gap) and the Zeitberg (a mountain) as two especially noteworthy must-dos for any stay.

In 2017, the Ammergau Alps Nature Park became Upper Bavaria´s very first nature park. Yet, sustainability and environmental education have been crucial topics in the area for many decades. In order to enjoy maybe the best view over the nature park, you should make a trip to its highest point. You can reach the summit of the 2.185 meter (corresponds to 7.168 feet) high Kreuzspitze by starting your trip in the Graswangtal (corresponds to Graswang valley), however, you´ll first have to leave 1.210 (corresponds to 3.969) meters in altitude behind you. For everybody who likes things less steep and intense, there is another interessting activitiy: in Bad Kohlgrub and Bad Bayersoien, there are moor-learning-trails, on which you can add to your knowledge theoretically as well as practically, by wading through the carefully constructed moor basins.

For all those who prefer waters, you definitely need to check out the Ammer, which runs between Graswangtal and Ammersee. Nearby Saulgrub, the Ammer has created a rock gap over the course of time, due to which it has been dubbed the area´s “Grand Canyon”. If you don´t want to miss out on this spectacle, you can reach the Ammer gap on entry-level hiking trails from Bad Bayersoien and Saulgrub. Hungry weekend trippers should consider to stop by the Aicheleschwaig guesthouse. If you look for a tour which is scenic and refreshing at the same time, you might want to check out the Schleifmühl Gorge nearby Unterammergau. It ranges among the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria and is, thanks to its Gumpen (corresponds to waterholes), perfect for family trips. Here, you can also learn about the history of the grindstone makers, a former group of craftsmen who are represented by a restored grindstone mill.

Moorlehrpfad

If you just can´t imagine to go on a trip without your bike, the nature park has something really special in store for you. The newly constructed and 14k long Waldblickweg  takes you from Ettal to Schloss Linderhof. Along the way, you´ll keep finding informative wood frames featuring some interesting information on such topics like the use of wood, environmental protection and forestry. What´s also quite a sight is the 450 hectare large Wiesmahd landscape, which is only mowed once a year – by hand. The resulting hay then serves as the basis for the renowned hay liquor, which is produced in the Ettal monastery after a secret recipe. Thus, the Ammergauer Alpen really caters to all senses. A very good transportation accessibility makes the offer complete. You can find additional information about the nature park right here:

Steckenberg Erlebnisberg

The Steckenberg Mountain in Unterammergau is the perfect adventure mountain for everyone. A 650-meter-long summer sledge run offers an unforgettable trip into the valley. Animals around the Steckenberg-Alm enjoy the summer on beautiful and green meadows. Alpacas, goats, sheep or pigs can be petted by visitors. The Steckenberg Mountain is also an ideal starting point for easy hikes or the athletic ascent in the beautiful mountains of the Ammergau Alps Nature Park. Especially recommended is a hike through the wild and romantic Schleifmühlklamm with its waterfalls and deep pools. In the past, the people produced whetstones there, which is demonstrated in an old, restored grinding mill.

Directly at the mountain station is the cottage Kolbensattel which has a treat for everyone on the menu. The Kolben Mountain is an ideal starting point for comfortable and easy hikes. But even experienced hikers will find beautiful and promising tours. Next to the cottage there is the starting point of the 2.6 km long Alpine Coaster. There is also a bike park near the valley station with 6 different trails for all levels of difficulty.

Enjoy a ride on the Laber Mountain with the nostalgic cable car in Oberammergau. The Laber Mountain doesn’t belong to the highest peaks of the Bavarian Alps (1684 meters), but it offers one of the most tremendous views. From there you have an amazing view of the foothills of the Alps with its many lakes, and on a clear day you can even see Munich and further north. From the Laber mountain station, the Ettaler Mandl (easy via ferrata and only for experienced mountaineers!) is easy to reach. Impressive nature experiences you get during the ascent or descent on the Soila lake. For the physical well-being is ensured at the summit restaurant.

The Hörnle Mountain in Bad Kohlgrub has 3 peaks, which you can reach via various hikes. From all summits you have a fantastic, all-round view.
