Winter time means dressing warm – and ideally with natural performance. Sport Conrad tester Andrea tried the merino functional underwear from Icebreaker and shares her verdict with you here.
Natural performance: this is exactly where Icebreaker comes in with its merino base layers. The balancing properties of merino wool and the pleasant warmth of this wonderful natural fiber promise a lot – and in the test, they definitely deliver.
Tested was the Icebreaker Oasis series, which quickly turned out to be an absolute recommendation for me. Whether you’re being sporty or taking it easy: endurance at any level, a winter walk, or a visit to the mulled wine stand – with functional underwear from Icebreaker’s Oasis line, you’re simply doing everything right.
Tested while skiing, cross-country skiing, and winter walking
I tested the functional underwear while skiing, cross-country skiing, and on a winter walk – and came to a clear conclusion.

Skiing: Warm all the way up to the Zugspitze – and beyond
Perfect for skiing on the Zugspitze – the underwear is also great “at the Zugspitze”! Over the merino shirt, I only wear a medium-weight midlayer and a ski jacket on top – and that’s completely sufficient. Even in cool temperatures, the body climate remains pleasantly balanced.
Over the functional tights, I only wear a hardshell pant. That’s all you need to be perfectly equipped for a great day on the slopes. Warm, dry, and absolutely comfortable.

Whether skiing, cross-country skiing, or going for a winter walk right outside the door – cold legs are not an issue with Icebreaker’s merino pants. Photo: Andrea Knab
Cross-country skiing: Personal sensitivity to cold decides
When cross-country skiing around the freezing point, I personally wouldn’t have needed functional tights – I was almost too warm. But of course, this is very individual and depends heavily on personal sensitivity to cold.
In colder temperatures, however, the pants are certainly extremely valuable and balancing, providing exactly the right amount of warmth without overheating.
The shirt, on the other hand, is something I wouldn’t want to miss under any circumstances. It regulates temperature perfectly, feels incredibly pleasant on the skin, and reliably accompanies me with every movement.
Everyday life & winter walks: Function meets style
Icebreaker Oasis merino underwear also impresses beyond sports use. I even love wearing the shirt at home because it looks so simple, timeless, and at the same time chic.
On a winter walk worn under thin pants, I didn’t feel cold at all. The functional tights are simply amazing and deliver exactly what they promise – reliable warmth and an all-around comfortable wearing experience.

Conclusion: MERINO AT ITS VERY BEST
All in all, my conclusion is clear:
The functional underwear from the Oasis line in the 200 g weight class is simply “excellent,” and I never want to be without it again.
It impresses with outstanding temperature and moisture management, a very comfortable fit that sits perfectly, and offers unrestricted freedom of movement. This is exactly how a base layer should be in winter.
I would never trade such a wonderful natural product for chemical fibers. Nature is and remains nature – and Icebreaker has truly brought out the best in merino wool here.
With that in mind, I wish you lots of joy and many great moments of discovery with this warming, balancing functional layer from Icebreaker.
