Caring for trekking poles – how to keep your companions in top form

Whether on steep climbs, long descents or tricky passages – trekking poles are indispensable helpers on tour. To ensure they provide you with reliable support and last a long time, you should regularly maintain your trekking poles. We’ll show you what you need to look out for and how you can ensure greater safety and durability with just a few simple steps.

WHY CARE FOR TREKKING POLES?

Trekking poles are constantly on the move – and constantly in contact with dirt, water, sweat and mechanical stress. Without care, they can become stiff, corroded or even fail when you need them most.

Regular care of your poles therefore promises:

✔ better handling
✔ longer service life
✔ maximum function on tour

TREKKING STICKS CARE: YOUR STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1. After every tour: remove coarse dirt

It is best to remove the coarsest dirt from the trekking poles with a damp cloth immediately after the tour – especially after rain, snow or contact with sand. This will prevent dirt from working its way into the mechanism.

2. don’t forget to dry

Sounds simple, but it’s essential: always allow poles to dry completely before putting them back together or storing them. Moisture can lead to corrosion in the long term, especially on models with internal tensioning mechanisms.

Tip: If necessary, disassemble the poles into their individual parts (segments) – this will also allow them to dry completely on the inside.

3. clean completely on a regular basis

For thorough care, you should occasionally take your trekking poles apart completely:

  • Dismantle poles segment by segment (for folding and telescopic models).
  • Wipe down with warm water and a mild detergent.
  • Do not use harsh cleaners or degreasing agents – they attack plastic parts and coatings.
  • Then dry well and allow the segments to dry completely before reassembling.

4. check fixing systems and mechanics

Clamping fasteners or tensioning ropes in particular should be checked regularly for proper function. If you notice that something is jammed or slipping, it often helps to carefully clean the clamping surfaces with a dry cloth – never oil or grease, as this impairs the clamping effect.

STORAGE: STORE CORRECTLY INSTEAD OF QUICKLY STOWING AWAY

After trekking pole care is before storage. Pay attention to this:

  • Store poles loosely pushed together (not jammed)
  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated place – not in a damp cellar or hot car
  • You should unhook the hand loops and also allow them to dry well to prevent odors and material wear.

CONCLUSION: THOSE WHO LOOK AFTER THEIR TREKKING POLES ARE SAFER

Whether it’s a day tour or a long-distance hike – well-maintained poles give you support, safety and comfort. If you look after your trekking poles regularly, you will not only ensure that they function optimally, but also extend their lifespan and avoid nasty surprises on the mountain.

💡 A little maintenance after the tour saves time, nerves – and money – in the long run!
