POC: Scandinavian Design Meets Sustainability

Piece of cake – that’s what POC, the Swedish cycling and winter sports brand, stands for. Developing sophisticated products that focus on the safety of professional and amateur athletes is anything but fun and easy. As if that weren’t complex enough, the brand has been working for several years to continuously reduce the environmental impact of its own business activities.

But first things first: POC was founded in 2004 and quickly made a name for itself in alpine racing. Four years later, the first bike collection was launched. Innovations such as VPD technology, the AVIP collection and the Spine VPD 2.0 airbag vest for ski racers followed. Product development at POC is always focused on protecting life and reducing the consequences of accidents. The innovative designs are developed in the POC LAB in Stockholm. There, innovative materials are used to develop POC technologies based on scientific information from technology and medicine.

The Swedes also rely on strategic cooperation with other companies: Since 2008, POC has integrated MIPS safety technology into its helmets. Since 2013, POC has also been working with Volvo to increase the safety of cyclists on the road. As part of this collaboration, a test protocol has been developed to analyse the effects of a crash on a cyclist – this type of test was not previously standard among helmet manufacturers.

In recent years, POC has taken on a new dimension with Project Blueprint. With Blueprint, the premium brand is committed to continuously reducing environmental impact and conserving resources in the long term. POC makes no compromises: safety is still the top priority, protection by POC products must always be given. However, there are many ways in which POC minimises the environmental impact of its activities.

Design

POC pays great attention to the durability of all materials used. The more robust the material, the longer the life of the product. In addition, repairability and smart design play an important role: Since 2019, POC uses easily replaceable lenses and snap-fits in its goggle models.

Innovative materials

Sustainability was a key aspect in the design process of the 2023 apparel collection: POC increasingly uses recycled materials without compromising performance or durability. Since 2022, a large part of the eyewear collection is made from bio-based materials.

Use of Chemicals

POC products are manufactured without PFAS and almost all products are free of biocides. Biocides are substances that inhibit the growth of bacteria and therefore the formation of odours. The shift to greener solutions has been made possible by reviewing the truly essential functions of products and developing new technologies.

Supply Chain

POC ensures that all suppliers and partners meet minimum social, environmental and chemical standards. In addition, the Swedish brand strictly excludes the use of certain harmful substances.

Product packaging

POC reduces its environmental impact by optimising the packaging of its products: the size of the packaging is precisely calculated to ensure the safety of the product without taking up unnecessary loading space. This results in better utilisation of the vehicles and a lower carbon footprint. In addition, POC uses recycled and responsibly sourced bio-based materials in its packaging wherever possible.
