Mountain Equipment uses 100 % down from species-appropriate animal husbandry. Tested and certified!
Mountain Equipment has been producing down sleeping bags and down clothing for alpine use since 1961. Their quality demands on the products require down of the best origin. Mountain Equipment is happy to take responsibility for this: environmental protection and species-appropriate animal husbandry have top priority!
Long before animal welfare organisations began to draw attention to abuses in poultry farming, Mountain Equipment was the first company in the world to work with the independent organisation IDFL on the animal welfare certification of supply chains in down production. This made Mountain Equipment the first outdoor brand to establish the Down Codex. In winter 2009/10 the first certified products came to the market. Since 2014, the supply chains of all down products can be checked and the results are presented transparently.
The Down Codex certificate is only awarded if the strictest ecological and animal-friendly requirements are met, which even exceed the applicable EU law by far:
- Animal welfare in a natural environment
- Forced fattening is excluded by guarantee
- Ban on live or moulting plucking
- Down is a pure by-product of food production
- Solvent-free cleaning of down
The origin of the down used in the products can be traced on the internet: Each product contains a sewn-in code that can be entered on the Down Codex website. This provides details on the origin and quality of the down as well as an IDFL animal welfare report.
Mountain Equipment – 10 years DOWN CODEX
When the Down Codex was introduced 10 years ago, Mountain Equipment did not make a big fuss about it. They didn’t hold any press conferences or organise any marketing campaigns. For them, the content and the consistent implementation of their project were more important. A few years later, other similar quality labels emerged on the market that focuse on animal welfare in the outdoor industry – and that’s a good thing! Mountain Equipment has enforced clear conditions and requirements in order to meet animal welfare as well as to obtain down of the best quality. Today, it is impossible to imagine their work without the Down Codex – the responsible and resource-saving use of natural material is extremely important to Mountain Equipment. It is just as important to manufacture particularly durable products that prove themselves without compromise in alpine use. Mountain Equipment even gives an exceptionally long guarantee on its down sleeping bags: they are covered against material or manufacturing defects for 10 years!
