Hiking Socks Guide – No more blisters

Hiking in the mountains is a wonderful way to get away from the stress of everyday life and just relax. But whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, there’s one thing you can’t do without for a comfortable hiking experience: The right hiking socks. To help you avoid blisters and chafed feet, here are a few tips to keep in mind next time you’re shopping for socks to help you overcome every climb and descent.

Why are hiking socks important?

The importance of hiking socks should not be underestimated. They are the foundation of hiking comfort, as they are in direct contact with your feet and have a significant impact on your well-being.

Finding the right size

This is similar to mountain boots and trekking shoes. If the socks don’t fit properly, you won’t get far. Above all, make sure the socks do not wrinkle when you wear them! Wrinkles can cause pressure points or blisters in your shoe. This also applies to the top of the sock. It should fit well, not pinch, but not slip. A good pair of hiking socks will keep your feet from blistering, help maintain a healthy foot climate, provide support when needed, and not weigh you down. It is best to ask a specialist for advice on the right socks for your mountaineering and trekking boots when you buy them.

Padding: Do you require it? And if so, where?

Depending on the shoe you have, the padding should be different. If your shoes have little padding, your socks should have more padding. Luggage also plays a big role, since it puts more weight on your feet. When it comes to padding, there are different designs, such as heel, metatarsal and toe pads. It is important to consider your footwear, your pack, the length of the trek, the temperature, and your personal preferences.

The right fabric for hiking socks is crucial

Cotton, merino wool, synthetic fibres, natural fibres? It is not easy to keep track, because each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

Synthetic and blended fibres

Synthetic socks have one big advantage: they absorb moisture and dry quickly. They also fit your foot well and are very light. They are particularly suitable for short but intense sports, such as running. We are talking about materials such as polyester, spandex, or polyamide. If you spend a lot of time in the mountains or in nature, it is advisable to use synthetic socks with silver fibres. These inhibit the odor that gradually develops.
Equally suitable and popular are socks made of wool and synthetic fibre blends. For example, a sock with 58% synthetic fibre and 42% merino wool. The fine merino wool reduces unpleasant foot odor, while the synthetic fibre content provides greater durability. So you get the best of both worlds.

Merino wool

Merino wool hiking socks have many benefits that you can take advantage of when hiking, climbing or mountaineering. They are moisture wicking, breathable and incredibly comfortable. Merino socks are perfect for all-day activities in all temperatures. That’s because merino fibre is a true all-rounder. It cools in the heat and warms in the cold. Merino socks have long been popular with mountaineers and trekkers.

Cotton socks are a no-go

You should not wear the cotton sock or the classic tennis sock when hiking and trekking. The reason is simple. They tend to dry very slowly. Not only is this uncomfortable, but it also encourages the formation of blisters. After a while, your skin becomes soft and very sensitive. The cotton sticks to your skin, which can quickly lead to soreness and friction.

Compression socks

Compression hiking socks are constructed differently than regular hiking socks. They are tightly woven and use stretchy fibres to apply pressure to the calves and ankles. This reduces leg fatigue and swelling because the leg muscles are better supplied with nutrients and oxygen. In addition, the slightly firmer stocking gently supports the muscles, which in turn stabilizes muscles and joints and can improve sure-footedness. Overall, circulation to the feet and ankles is improved, making them ideal for long hikes.

Finding the right length

Hiking socks are now available in all lengths – from knee-high socks for ski touring, to ankle-high hiking socks, to low-cut socks designed specifically for trail running. It is important to make sure that the length of the sock matches the height of the shoe. Otherwise, socks that are too short can quickly cause friction between the shoe and your skin.

Which sock for which shoe?

As mentioned earlier, you should always try on the appropriate socks when buying shoes. For example, merino or wool/synthetic blend socks are perfect for Gore-Tex mountain boots. Cotton socks are not recommended for use with Gore-Tex and most other mountain boots because they absorb moisture quickly and dry slowly.

Our tip: Wearing full leather mountain boots? Wear a thicker pair of socks. This will reduce friction and prevent blisters.

By the way: It is NOT recommended to wear two socks on top of each other. This can lead to wrinkles, pressure points and blisters.

Checklist:

  • finding the right fit – no wrinkles
  • eventually cushioning or compression
  • match material to activity
  • find a suitable length
  • combine the right socks with your shoes
