We donate: our contribution to people and nature

As a family-run business in the fourth generation, it has always been important to us to support regional and national non-profit associations or projects. The organizations we support with our donations are active in the areas of nature and climate protection, mountain rescue, general medical care, support for children and young people, social affairs, sport, and culture. In the following, we would like to list which organizations or associations we were able to support with our donations in the last couple of months and years.

Our donations

Donation: Together for Winter Sports in Our Region

This year, the Wir Denken Um Week is dedicated to a special fundraising campaign: We are supporting children from the region through free of charge ski tickets, so that they can enjoy unforgettable winter experiences right on their doorstep. Our goal: To give children the opportunity to learn skiing—a valuable experience that is often only possible with local ski resorts. In doing so, we not only secure the future of winter sports but also promote sustainable, short routes with a small CO₂ footprint.

The ski passes will be distributed specifically in smaller ski areas within our local districts. It is precisely these often family-run areas that, with a great deal of dedication and passion, preserve snow sports in the region—and perhaps even nurture the ski stars of tomorrow. Michael Krinner from Ötzliften shares in our magazine interview just how much heart and effort it takes to run such a ski area.

Ticket Distribution
We eagerly await Frau Holle and hope for a snow-filled season. As soon as the time comes, we will inform you about the start of ticket distribution!

Thanks to Our Supporter Fischer
A heartfelt thank you goes to the ski brand Fischer, which is generously supporting us with an additional donation of €6,000 as part of its 100th anniversary celebrations. Together, we can achieve great things—for the children, winter sports, and our region!

Joint Donation for Nordic Youth at SCM

Sport Conrad and former biathlete Tim Grotian from Mittenwald have jointly donated €2,200 to the Skiclub Mittenwald e.V. (SCM). The funds come from the sale of secondhand outdoor clothing through Sport Conrad’s NOMOI program. Tim Grotian sold outdoor clothing worth €1,200 via NOMOI, and Sport Conrad topped up the donation with an additional €1,000. The donation money was used, among other things, to purchase rental equipment for children to promote youth in cross-country skiing and biathlon.

Tim Grotian emphasized the importance of support from his hometown club:
“Without my former coaches and the many volunteers at Skiclub Mittenwald, my career would not have been possible. I am very happy to give something back with my donation.”

Hans Conrad, Managing Director of Sport Conrad, highlighted the significance of supporting young talent: “Our local sports clubs make an important contribution to inspiring young people’s enjoyment of sports and fostering the winter sports stars of tomorrow.”

The donation check was presented on November 12, 2024, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen by Tim Grotian, Nina Schwind, and Maria Ries to Jörg Woitek, Nordic Sports Director at Skiclub Mittenwald.

Support for school projects in the summer of 2024

According to BR, between 30 and 40% of sports lessons were cancelled in 2022 due to a lack of teachers. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports similar figures for 2023. As a result, children and young people are getting less and less exercise. But exercise doesn't fall by the wayside in all schools. At the beginning of 2024, we were contacted by four schools whose classes had planned ambitious sports projects.

Both a class from Penzberg Gymnasium and a class from Bad Tölz Gymnasium had planned to cross the Alps as part of a P-seminar. The students planned everything on their own, from the route to the accommodation to the implementation. The pupils themselves also asked us for support from Sport Conrad. The Huglfing Waldorf School also travelled across the Alps as part of a long-term project.

Each pupil received a Sport Conrad shopping voucher. Our employees in the stores were happy to take the time to give the young athletes expert advice and to provide them with the best possible equipment for their projects.

We were also able to provide financial support to the Uffing primary school for its "climate-neutral school trip" project. A total of €11,300 was raised to support the four classes.

Donations for storm victims in Bad Bayersoien and Benediktbeuern/Bichl

On Saturday, August 26, 2023, a severe storm with hailstorms severely devastated some communities in Upper Bavaria. Storm Denis destroyed countless houses and thousands of cars. As a company based in the affected districts, we feel connected to the residents of these communities and have therefore decided to donate 1% of the net sales of the WIR DENKEN UM Week and the NOMOI sale equally to the communities of Bad Bayersoien that were severely affected by the storm disaster and Benediktbeuern to donate.

The donations flow into the storm funds set up there and are used by the communities for a specific purpose for private individuals and associations that urgently need support to cushion hardship cases. The donations of 10,074 euros each will flow into the storm funds set up by the communities and will be used by them for a specific purpose for private individuals and associations that urgently need support to cushion cases of hardship.

On December 13, 2023, the donation checks were handed over to Anton Ortlieb, 1. mayor of Benediktbeuern, and Karl-Heinz Schuster, 2nd Mayor of Bad Bayersoien.

"I am very impressed with Sport Conrad's willingness to help and their connection to the region and would like to thank them for this generous donation to the Community Foundation," said Mayor Anton Ortlieb.

Donation to the Centre for Environment and Culture in Benediktbeuern (ZUK)

We have also donated €2,000 to the Centre for Environment and Culture in Benediktbeuern Abbey (ZUK). This had to close due to severe hail and storm damage. Almost all parts of the monastery building were badly damaged, and rain seeped into the rooms until helpers covered them.

The ZUK is an educational and guest centre dedicated to nature conservation and the education of children, young people and adults. Parts of the ZUK are now up and running again. If you would like to donate, you can find all the information on the ZUK website.

TSV Partenkirchen: "Concept "Sport after 12 all in

1% of the net turnover of the Ortovox special sale and 1% of the net turnover of the WDU week in July 2023 will go in equal parts to TSV Partenkirchen and DAV Bad Tölz. This is a total of 6,400 euros. 3,200 each will go to TSV Partenkirchen and DAV Bad Tölz.. With its "Sport after 12 all in" concept, TSV Partenkirchen offers children the opportunity to have lunch, including homework supervision and sports activities.

The children's sports school (KiSS) concept aims to counteract the lack of physical activity by making exercise fun. The afternoon programme focuses on the social and preventive health aspects of exercise.

"KiSS is a qualified programme to develop children's basic motor skills. The focus is on cross-sport movement experiences, a variety of body experiences and, above all, playfulness. We want to get children moving, have fun and feel good. In addition, we have set ourselves the goal of offering not only individual lessons, but also a kind of after-school care centre in a mobile form. This means that the children can come to us in the hall from around 12 noon, have lunch, do their homework and be moved by us for an hour. (Johanna Saul, head of KiSS). The "Sport after 12 all in" project is part of KiSS and has been running since 17 April 2023.

The Sport Conrad x Dynafit Eckbauer Challenge generates additional donations for the "Sport after 12 all in" concept. The challenge is as simple as it is ingenious: two Dynafit athletes set a time on the Eckbauer - according to the motto "Beat the Athlete" everyone can try to beat the set time. Not only are there prizes for the runners who are faster than the Dynafit athletes, but the highlight of the concept is that for every 100 metres of altitude covered, one euro is donated to the charity pot.The challenge will take place from 30 June to 31 July 2023.

Inclusive Climbing Group, DAV Bad Tölz

Part of the proceeds from our WIR DENKEN UM week and our NOMOI sale in June/July 2023 will also go to the DAV Bad Tölz and benefit the Inclusive Climbing Group. Children with and without disabilities have been climbing together there since 2007. There are now three teams in which a total of 13 children with different disabilities climb.

The climbing groups are characterised by a strong sense of togetherness and mutual support. Climbing in particular is very suitable for inclusive groups. It is a sport that allows the instructors to respond individually to each child's abilities. T

he DAV Bad Tölz has the necessary expertise in the form of special trainer training and further training for climbing with people with disabilities. If you are interested, please contact the DAV Bad Tölz office on 08041 / 2507.

The €3,200 donation enabled the inclusion climbing group to go on a trip to the bouldering world in Munich East. The children and young people worked together on boulders and faced many challenges.

Protect our winters

During our WIR DENKEN UM week 2022, which took place for the second time this November and is our answer to the Black Week, we collected one percent of the net sales for nature and climate protection. The donation went equally to the KlimaAlps and POW (Protect Our Winters) initiatives.

Protect Our Winters is a non-profit, global organization committed to climate protection. Its founder is professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, who found a way with POW to connect passionate snow and outdoor sports enthusiasts to fight together against the consequences of climate change. Jones realized back in 2007 that an increasing number of the ski resorts he favored for shredding pow had to close due to lack of snow. Other concerned sports professionals, individuals, ski resorts and outdoor brands quickly joined – POW is now a global network of over 60 million outdoor athletes and enthusiasts.

Among other things, POW ambassadors work within their sphere of activity and through lectures to turn passionate outdoor athletes into effective climate protectors. POW aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 – which is why the organization advocates the expansion of renewable energies, a sustainable turnaround in transport and sensible CO₂ pricing.

During the WIR DENKEN UM week, we were able to collect 10,695 euros for POW Germany. The German POW offshoot consists mainly of volunteer members who work for POW in their free time to help protect the climate. With our donation, we can make a small contribution and support the passionate POW Germany team in their work.

KlimaAlps

Another organization that we were able to support with one percent of our net sales during our WIR DENKEN um week 2022 is the national climate protection organization KlimaAlps. Like POW, the organization, which is only a few hundred meters from our Penzberg branch, received a donation of 10,695 euros.

KlimaAlps shows the consequences of climate change by making changes in the local landscape visible. On hiking and walking routes, so-called KlimaTopen, you can explore how our homeland has already changed due to the climate crisis and how it will change in the future. These can be found, for example, in the Ammer Valley, in Benediktbeuern and in the Karwendel Nature Park.

Climate educators who have the necessary specialist knowledge and relevant pedagogical skills are helpful. The donation money from Sport Conrad supports KlimaAlps by financing scholarships for training as a climate educator. The climate educators are important multipliers who inform schools and other areas of society about climate change and inspire people to behave to live more sustainably.

In addition, KlimaAlps is building a network of actors in education, research, tourism, and politics to fight together against the consequences of climate change.

Bergwaldprojekt e.V.

From November 10th to 28th, 2021, the WIR DENKEN UM week took place at Sport Conrad for the first time. During this period, we offered our sustainable and responsible WIR DENKEN UM brands an even better stage in order to invite our customers to a more conscious consumption. We donated 1 percent of the net sales generated during this period for reforestation – 13,000 Euros went to Bergwaldproject e.V..

The organization used the money to plant 2,600 seedlings in the Farchant forest district. The organization Bergwaldprojekt e.V. has been working since 2010 in a joint project with the AELF (Office for Agriculture and Forestry) in Weilheim (Murnau branch) and the forestry company Oberammergau, Bayerische Staatsforsten, mainly in the restoration of protective forests.

Today more than ever, protective forest restoration is important for the protection of the population and the preservation of intact nature, since mountain forests counteract avalanches, the danger of water masses and soil erosion and bind greenhouse gases. The reforestation and care interventions in our region are necessary in order to build up and permanently maintain the protective effect of the mountain forests.

WIR DENKEN UM Tag 2022 – Reforestation in Oberammergau

We used the other part of the 1 percent donation for our WIR DENKEN UM Day 2022, which took place in May. There it was said for Sport Conrad employees and family members: roll up your sleeves and tackle it together! With the help of the privateforest community Oberammergau we were able to experience at the Laber and in the forests of Ettal how much fun it is to be active in climate protection. The Sport Conrad team planted seedlings there themselves – not even a hailstorm could stop us.

The private forest community manages a total of 1800 hectares of forest in the districts of Ettal and Oberammergau. An important aspect for the community: sustainable management. The PWG is aware of its responsibility towards the local population and those seeking relaxation and is committed to preserving the unique landscape.

The PWG has been certified according to the PEFC criteria since 2005 and sells wood to sawmills in the vicinity – in this way, the PWG contributes to making a renewable raw material available locally.

Sponsorship with the Himalaya's Children Foundation

Sport Conrad has been donating to the Himalaya's Children Foundation for many years – the total donation within the last three years amounts to 36,000 Euros. The Swiss foundation is committed to socially and financially disadvantaged children from remote areas in the Himalayas. About 250 children receive a home and support in the form of education through Himalaya's Children.

With the founding of the Himalaya's Children Foundation, the Swiss foundation focuses on supporting children in the Mustang region of Nepal. Over the years, children from other Himalayan regions have also joined, mainly from Dolpa and Grokha. The foundation is managed by a volunteer team of 6, so that all donations benefit the children in full and do not trickle away into wages or expenses for the organization. The Board of Trustees regularly visits the Great Compassion Boarding School in Lo-Manthang. There is also a local team on site.

Our donation of 10,000 euros in 2021 helped the foundation deal with the impact of the corona pandemic on children, families, school staff and teachers. The donation of 15,000 euros from 2022 was mainly used for maintenance and expansion measures at the Himalaya's Children Hostel. More information about our donations to Himalaya's Children can be found here. Please find the yearly report 2023/24 (only German) here.
