our sustainability road map

We have set ourselves no smaller goal than to be the most sustainable outdoor retailer in the alpine region with alpine products. Because we as a company want to make our contribution to slowing down the rapid progress of climate change. The current report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows how dramatic the consequences can become: If the average global temperature rises above the 1.5 degree mark agreed in the Paris climate treaty compared to pre-industrial levels - which is likely to happen in the next decade - tipping points and domino effects in the climate system would become more likely. Without concerted and rapid global action, the window of opportunity to enable a livable

future will quickly close, he said. In the future, we people in the global North, who have contributed the most to emissions and are the best protected, are unlikely to be spared the consequences of accelerated global warming - whether directly through heat waves, mega-floods and infectious diseases, or indirectly through climate-induced economic crises, violent conflicts and refugee movements. Melting or dying glaciers are a clear sign of climate change. They not only hurt the hearts of us outdoor sports enthusiasts, but also have fatal ecological (and economic) consequences and impacts. Since the turn of the millennium, glaciers in the Alps have lost about 17 percent of their volume.

Our vision: We are pioneers

Sport Conrad is 125 years old: we were one of the first first retailers with outdoor and ski equipment. We were one of the first retailers to enter the online business. Always fueled by our own passion for the mountains and sports.

Our vision:
We are breaking new ground.
We offer sustainable product ranges and services.
We do business in a forward-looking way.
We are pioneers.

We live our nature and follow our inner voice. By focusing on being guides of change, we live our "why", which drives and motivates us day after day. For this we rethink our product ranges, our actions, our processes and take responsibility for our actions. We love challenges, look for solutions and always act courageously. We trust in strong partnerships and see ourselves as part of the big picture. It goes without saying that we have to leave the beaten and take a new direction. This may not always be the the easiest way, but it is the right one - for a future worth living.

Our path: The Sport Conrad Mountain Path - Together with the Vaude Academy, we developed our sustainability roadmap, our "Sport Conrad Mountain Path" in three workshops. An important building block: our carbon footprint, which we also recorded and balanced with the professional help of an external consultancy. By the end of 2030, we will reduce our CO2 footprint enormously compared to the base year 2019 (in Scope 1 and 2 by 70%, in Scope 3 by 50%) - that means saving wherever possible in our business operations. For example: Reducing green electricity consumption, packaging materials and print jobs, avoiding waste, returning resources to the cycle, modernizing our sites according to environmental criteria and generating our own electricity via PV systems. We will also review our suppliers and make them more accountable. And we will align our product range via sustainable products: In apparel, footwear and softgoods, we are already well on our way. For hardgoods such as skis, snowboards, bindings, the industry is still in the early stages, but we will use our influence as a retailer and clarify our requirements. Together with the industry and with our customers, we want to solve problems that go beyond our actual scope of action and help to provide our children with a future worth living.

In our carbon footprint (base year 2019), electricity consumption accounts for 11%. By switching to green electricity, we save over 100 tons of CO2e per year.

With our photovoltaic system on our building building at the Wielenbach branch, we generated 43,955 kWh of renewable of renewable electricity - and consumed 31,847 kWh of it ourselves. We fed 12,108 kWh into the public grid.

We are part of the KliMaWirtschaft project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

We are reducing our footprint. In addition, we offset support regional and international climate protection projects.

We have the responsibility - Already in 2018 we started our sustainability initiative WIR DENKEN UM (WDU) and published it with our summer catalog 2019. For us, "rethinking" means leaving conventional paths and taking a new route. A conviction to want to do more for our home and our future has become a task that challenges us more the longer we look at it. If we want to stop climate change, preserve our (mountain) world and improve living and working conditions worldwide, we have to act now. A first step: our WIR DENKEN UM label, which we use to recognize responsible brands and companies. In 2021, we tightened up the assessment process and tapped our portfolio of 350 brands. A good 100 qualified. But that alone is not enough. It takes convinced people who are happy to take this more demanding tour: Our business partners, our customers and our employees, with whom we rethink together - and make a contribution together every day.

We have the responsibility! For an intact environment, for our human interaction and for the legacy we leave to the next generation. We! No one else. But we also have a choice. Our consumer behavior, our travel habits, our food, our politics - we always have a choice. And right now is the right moment to do the right thing. Because there's no time to wait for politicians to change our behavior by law. We have to get out of our comfort zone: bike instead of car. Train instead of short-haul flight. Vegetarian delicacies instead of steak. Repair the ski jacket we've grown fond of before it ends up carelessly in the trash. Or wearing your running shoes a few kilometers longer. Hand on heart, none of this hurts and outlines that we can all do our part.

WIR DENKEN UM: Our initiative since 2018

Ambitious and in a team

For us, sustainability is not a solo sprint, but more like crossing the Alps as a team. Every step counts. Every stage. Sometimes it also requires a route correction. To successfully reach the goal - whereby sustainability can never be fully achieved, but is an ongoing innovation process - requires preparation, foresight, stamina and small successes. That is why we have anchored sustainability strategically in our company. Sustainable management and rethinking should be reflected in all levels and departments, in our eCommerce and our stores, and in our daily decisions.

Together with our management and our WIR DENKEN UM team, we gather ideas to improve our footprint as a company and implement measures whenever possible without hesitation. We convert our vehicle fleet to electric mobility an installed solar panels on our central warehouse in Iffeldorf to cover our electricity needs ourselves. We have also calculated our ecological footprint as a basis for further improvement.

Certainly, all this is not enough to stop global warming. But we are living up to our share of responsibility - and we will not stand still.
