Hardshell jackets are an essential piece of gear for anyone who refuses to let the weather dictate their outdoor plans. Whether you’re facing pouring rain, strong winds, or heavy snow – a hardshell jacket offers reliable protection, comfort, and breathability.
At Sport Conrad, you’ll find a wide range of hardshell jackets from top brands such as Mountain Equipment, Ortovox, and Salewa.
In this guide, we’ll explain what defines a hardshell jacket, the differences in materials and membrane technologies, the various types of constructions, and what to wear underneath. Finally, we’ll provide a buying guide to help you choose the right jacket. Our experts in the Sport Conrad stores in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Penzberg, and Wielenbach are also happy to provide personal advice.
What is a Hardshell Jacket?
A hardshell jacket – often called a “hard shell” – is far more than just a rain jacket. The term “hardshell” literally means “hard shell” and perfectly describes its function: these jackets are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
Unlike standard rain jackets, which are often just water-repellent, hardshell jackets are fully waterproof, windproof, and breathable. This is achieved through a clever combination of a durable outer fabric and a special membrane that blocks moisture from the outside while allowing sweat (water vapor) to escape from the inside.
The result: you stay dry, warm, and comfortable even in challenging conditions.

How is a Hardshell Different from a Softshell?
While a hardshell jacket focuses on maximum weather protection in harsh conditions, a softshell jacket is designed for milder, drier conditions.
-Softshells are water-repellent, not waterproof, more flexible, more breathable, and have a softer feel.
-For light rain and wind, softshells are ideal, but in heavy rain or snowstorms, they reach their limits.
-Hardshell jackets are the right choice for harsh conditions, including ice and snow.
When Does a Hardshell Jacket Make Sense?
Hardshell jackets are ideal if you’re outdoors in bad weather: heavy rain, snow, or cold temperatures. Whether hiking in the mountains, skiing in freezing weather, or on multi-day trekking tours – a hardshell jacket shows its strengths in rough conditions.
Thanks to their materials and membranes, they block rain and snow while allowing moisture to escape. This keeps you dry and helps maintain warmth.

Different types of hardshell jackets
Hard shell jackets differ primarily in their layer construction: there are models with two, two and a half or three layers. Each construction has different areas of application and offers specific advantages. A hardshell consists of a top layer (outer material), a membrane (or PU coating) and an inner lining. The outer layer is usually made of polyester or polyamide, as is the inner layer.
2-Layer Jackets (2L)
The outer fabric and membrane are laminated into one layer, with a loose lining added inside. These are excellent for everyday use, hiking, and general outdoor activities.
2.5-Layer Jackets (2.5L)
Here, the outer fabric is laminated with a membrane, but instead of a separate lining, there is a thin protective print layer. These jackets are lightweight and packable – ideal for trekking, cycling, or travel.
3-Layer Jackets (3L)
In this premium construction, the outer fabric, membrane, and inner fabric are fully laminated together. These jackets are extremely robust, durable, and designed for harsh environments such as alpine sports, skiing, and expeditions.

How does the difference feel?
A 3-layer hardshell jacket is generally a bit heavier and can feel stiffer than a 2-layer jacket. This is due to the more robust construction and the additional laminated layers. Nevertheless, a 3-layer hardshell is still lighter than insulated ski jackets because it has no lining or insulation.
A 2-layer jacket, on the other hand, can range from a lightly lined shell to a heavily insulated winter parka, making a direct comparison more difficult.
Which is better: 2L or 3L?
2-layer hardshell jackets are the standard and are suitable for a wide variety of outdoor activities. They are versatile and therefore very popular.
3-layer hardshell jackets, on the other hand, are more technical and are often chosen by those who need maximum protection and durability for demanding outdoor adventures.
For backcountry tours – in both summer and winter – 3-layer jackets are often the go-to choice, as you can easily adjust your layering system underneath depending on effort level and weather conditions.

What types of membranes are there?
The membrane is the heart of a hardshell jacket, providing windproof and waterproof protection while allowing breathability. The word membrane comes from Latin and literally means “thin skin” – a fitting description for this delicate separating layer.
- Gore-Tex: The classic among membranes, used by many manufacturers. Gore-Tex is made of ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) with a microporous structure. This makes the membrane extremely waterproof while still allowing water vapor (sweat) to escape.
- Dermizax: Made from polyurethane. This hydrophilic material absorbs moisture at the molecular level and transports water vapor to the outside.
- Sympatex: Consists of two components: a hydrophobic polyester and a hydrophilic polyether. This combination prevents water from entering from the outside while wicking moisture from the inside to keep you dry.
All of these membranes have one thing in common: they provide reliable protection against moisture while allowing sweat to escape, ensuring that you stay dry and comfortable.
Zippers & Pit Zips
The quality of the zippers is crucial for weather protection. High-quality hardshell jackets use waterproof zippers to prevent water from seeping into pockets or the inside of the jacket.
Many premium hardshell jackets also feature pit zips – ventilation zippers located under the armpits. These allow you to regulate your body temperature quickly and let excess moisture escape – a particularly useful feature during strenuous activities.

Chin Guard & Hood
A chin guard at the top of the zipper prevents uncomfortable rubbing against the skin and increases wearing comfort. The hood is a key element of a hardshell jacket and must be both windproof and waterproof.
- Helmet compatibility: For sports that require a helmet, it’s important that the hood is large enough to fit comfortably over the helmet.
- Adjustability: A hood with adjustable drawcords (often operable with one hand) allows you to fine-tune the fit around your head and helmet.
- Fixed vs. removable hoods: Fixed hoods are generally warmer and offer better weather protection. Removable hoods provide flexibility and more freedom of movement in good weather.
Fit & Sizing
The right fit is essential for a hardshell jacket to perform properly. It should not be too tight, as it is designed to be worn as part of a layering system – over base layers and midlayers such as fleece or insulated jackets.
Choose a size that allows enough room for these additional layers underneath, ensuring optimal protection from cold and wet conditions without restricting freedom of movement.

Specific Features for Men, Women, and Kids
While the basic functions of a hardshell jacket are the same regardless of gender, there are a few aspects that differ between jackets for men, women, and children:
- Fit: Women’s models are often more tailored and designed to suit the female anatomy, while men’s jackets typically have a straighter cut. Kids’ jackets are specifically designed to meet the needs of children, offering more freedom of movement.
- Design: Although functionality comes first, women’s jackets often offer a wider variety of colors and cuts for a more stylish look.
- Sizing: The size ranges differ by gender and age. Always check the manufacturer’s sizing charts to ensure the best fit.
What to Wear Under a Hardshell Jacket
Since a hardshell jacket usually does not have insulation, the choice of clothing underneath is crucial to staying warm and dry in different seasons and weather conditions. The layering principle is key:
- Base layer (first layer): Worn directly on the skin, this breathable functional underwear wicks away moisture and keeps your skin dry. Merino wool or synthetic fabrics are ideal here.
- Midlayer (second layer): Provides insulation and warmth. Fleece jackets, lightweight down jackets, or Primaloft jackets work well here. You can find them in our Midlayer category.
- Hardshell jacket (third layer): The outer layer protects you from wind, rain, and snow.
In milder weather, you can skip the midlayer and just wear a base layer. In cold conditions, an insulating midlayer is essential to retain warmth. For more flexibility in less extreme conditions, consider our selection of softshell jackets as an alternative.
