Our Sport Conrad Carbon Footprint 2023

To drive change, we annually determine our current status through our carbon footprint assessment. This serves as the foundation to set reduction targets and measures and to consistently reduce the CO₂ emissions we cause. Our approach to calculating greenhouse gas emissions at the company level follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the leading standard. According to this protocol, not only carbon dioxide (CO₂) but also other climate-relevant emissions like methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) are recorded and converted into so-called CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e) based on their global warming potential. The GHG Protocol divides the emission sources to be calculated into three Scopes:

Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as the combustion of gas for heating company sites.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the purchase of energy, such as (green) electricity or district heating and cooling.

Scope 3: Indirect emissions from upstream and downstream value chains, such as emissions related to products in our assortment.

Our Carbon Footprint in Detail: An Overview of the Scopes

In our carbon footprint, we record emissions across all three scopes. In Scope 1 and 2, we calculate emissions from the consumption of natural gas, district heating, electricity, and refrigerants.

In Scope 3, we include emissions from our product assortment, packaging and shopping bags, marketing and office materials, website services, upstream energy supply chains, transportation (inbound and outbound) and e-commerce shipping, waste and water, business travel, as well as employee commuting and working from home.

Our total CO₂ emissions amounted to 8,314 tons in 2023. Direct emissions make up only a very small portion of our total carbon footprint (2%). Emissions from Scope 2 — i.e., emissions from purchased energy — are nearly 0% of total emissions thanks to our use of green electricity and district heating from renewable sources.

The largest share—98%—of our emissions comes from indirect sources across upstream and downstream supply chains, such as our product assortment and capital goods. In 2023, these emissions totaled 8,175 tons of CO₂, making up by far the biggest portion of our overall carbon footprint. As a member of the Outdoor Retailer Climate Commitment, we collaborate with industry partners to improve the tracking and reduction of these emissions across the entire supply chain.
