More About ORTLIEB

ORTLIEB’s product range includes bike bags, backpacks, travel luggage and other transport solutions for outdoor and cycling use. According to the brand, three core values are at the heart of the brand: durable products designed to be repaired rather than replaced, consistently waterproof construction and in-house manufacturing in Germany. According to the manufacturer, around 70 percent of the materials used also originate from Germany.

Company History

ORTLIEB’s story began in 1982 with a simple idea. Founder Hartmut Ortlieb developed the first waterproof bike bags out of necessity, as no comparable products were available at the time. The first models were handmade and tested on trips. From these early beginnings, the company gradually evolved into an internationally successful manufacturer of waterproof outdoor gear. Today, the range includes several hundred products. The ambition to develop products based on real-world use and to continuously improve their quality continues to shape the company to this day.

Repair Instead of Replace

A key part of the brand philosophy is product repairability. ORTLIEB designs its bags so that individual components can be easily replaced. Even after intensive use, many products can be restored either through the brand’s own repair service, specialist retailers or with spare parts and DIY repair guides.

This is complemented by a 5-year warranty on all products and a 10-year spare parts guarantee after a product has been discontinued.

Waterproof

Products are consistently designed to ensure long-lasting waterproof performance. The three key factors are the materials used, the construction methods and the closure systems. Polyester, nylon and Cordura fabrics, coated on one or both sides, ensure a high level of waterproofing. The fabrics and welded seams are waterproof up to a 100,000 mm water column, achieved through a specialized high-frequency welding process. All closure systems are also tested under environmental simulation conditions.

Made in German

Production takes place entirely in Germany, specifically at the Heilsbronn site. Development, design and manufacturing are all under one roof, ensuring consistently high quality, supporting local jobs and enabling efficient processes. Around 70 percent of the raw materials used also come from Germany.
