Product details: Totem Cam Friend
The Cam Friends have four camming segments that can be used independently for better holding power in any gap. The patented Direct Loading Camming Device System (US Patent 7014156) distributes the load evenly to each camming segment.
The Totem Cam has capabilities that other cams do not have. Load with only two jaws so it can be placed in very shallow or open crevasses where one or two outer jaws cannot touch the rock. To load a pair of jaws, simply clip the carabiner into one of the two side loops.
This function is only for locomotion and not as a solid intermediate belay in case of a fall. The holding force is thus halved and the stability is also lower. Crevasses where only two jaws can be loaded can be used for technical climbing to hold the weight of the body.
Larger maximum angle as the gap widens slightly towards the bottom. This type of cleavage should be avoided, because the compressive stress on the rock and on the clamp components is significantly increased, and consequently the cleavage gives way much more easily. Nevertheless, the Totem Cam is theoretically suitable for holding in a cleft that widens downwards to 40.7 degrees.
The more open a gap is, the more the corresponding cam angle of the Totem Cam increases from 13 degrees in parallel gaps to 20.35 degrees in gaps open to after 40.7 degrees. In other words, higher friction is required in open gaps.
