LEKI trekking poles made of hemp

Hemp One Vario

"The future belongs to this hippie," proclaims the pole and glove specialist LEKI. With the new Hemp One Vario trekking pole, the Swabian brand is breaking new ground. The telescope trekking pole is largely made of natural and resource-saving materials. In order to realise its vision of a pole made from renewable resources, LEKI turned to hemp farmers.

About the Hemp One Vario

Why hemp in poles production?

Hemp has long been used in fashion andeven in sportswear. The natural fibre is also becoming increasingly popular in accessories such as climbing shoes. LEKI has been working with the German Institute for Textile and Fibre Research (DITF) for several years. This led to the idea of producing a pole from the renewable raw material hemp. Hemp is a natural fibre with very good material properties, which is now being used in the production of poles.

Hemp fibres have very good strength values and therefore serve as an alternative to synthetic materials. The advantage: hemp is a very undemanding and fast-growing plant that can be cultivated in many climatic zones. LEKI obtains its hemp from a field in the Swabian Alb, just six kilometres from the company's headquarters.

By using hemp composite material in the LEKI Hemp One Vario, the aluminium content in the shaft can be reduced. Aluminium is a problematic material because a lot of land has to be sacrificed to mine aluminium-bearing rock. In addition, the production of aluminium is very energy intensive and produces toxic by-products*. In the Hemp One Vario, LEKI has succeeded in replacing about 80 % of the shaft material with hemp fibres - a big step towards environmentally friendly materials and production.

Handmade in Europe

The LEKI Hemp One Vario is handmade. After harvesting, the hemp stalks are dried, roasted and broken into fibre strands. The shafts are then made from a mixture of hemp and resin. Final assembly takes place at LEKI's production facility in Tachov, Czech Republic. The handle, plate and strap are also made from natural materials.
