Gear Review Deuter Guide Lite 30+

Deuter Guide Lite 30+ Backpack

Deuter is one of THE German backpack manufacturers, the company works sustainably and also assumes social responsibility in its production. So if there is anything new from the Wir denken um certified company from Gersthofen, then we have to test it right away. Our Ambassador, Valentin Rapp, from the Flow Valley Crew took the Deuter Guide Lite 30+ with him on his tour to the Zugspitze.

Gear Review

A large main case, several small pockets, many attachment possibilities, a comfortable carrying system, and besides it should be light. Finding a backpack that combines all this isn’t that easy. The Deuter Guide Lite 30+ seems very close to fulfilling all these criteria at first sight. However, since a first impression is never enough for a recommendation, a thorough practical test should follow.

On a joint tour with a friend, I wanted to test the backpack in a very wide range of applications. The goal was the north face of the Zugspitze. More precisely, the tour “Eisenzeit”. 500 vertical meters by bike and then 1600 vertical meters of hiking, climbing, and crossing snowfields.

First Impression

After unpacking, the low weight is immediately noticeable. 30 liters volume with only 900 grams is impressive, especially since it isn’t a minimalist climbing backpack, but a well-equipped backpack for many different mountain tours. But those who still want to save a few grams can remove the lid case of the Guide Lite 30+ and use only the main case.
The backpack offers an easily accessible main case, a lid with a large outer case, and a small inner pocket where the usual safety instructions are printed. There is also the possibility to install a drinking system.

For more demanding tours, the backpack offers very practical attachments for ropes, an ice ax, a helmet, and a gear loop on the hip belt.

The lid pocket is attached with two hooks to a sewn-on daisy chain, which also offers more possibilities to hang equipment on the backpack. On the side, you can also compress the Deuter with two straps each of the tour is a little smaller.

on Tour

Everything finds its place immediately when packing. However, a second access to the main case would be practical. The attachments for pickaxe, helmet, hydration system, and rope make a robust impression. The adaptable carrying system nestles comfortably against the back, the generous hip straps are super comfortable on the bike as well as when hiking and climbing. Unfortunately the backpack – probably due to weight reasons – has no ventilation net on the back. Just always pack an additional shirt, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

On the tour, all things are always easily accessible. Due to the low weight, you can also quickly and easily remove the backpack to unpack or pack something. Practical: There is also a small pocket on the hip belt for the power bar in between. The outer material is very robust and the one or other rock contact leaves no traces. Also, it shows up very water-repellent in a conducted water test at a creek. The backpack should therefore survive a short rain shower without any problems even without a rain cover.

The Deuter Guide Lite 30+ has great potential to become my new backpack for all occasions. The combination of features, weight, and carrying comfort has convinced me very much. For those who find the simple black too easy, the Deuter Guide Lite 30+ is also available in a brighter red version. Another plus is that Deuter places great value on sustainability and is certified by bluesign and Fair Wear.
