08.12.2016 | Experience Nepal at Sport Conrad in Garmisch

High quality outdoor apparel, professional consulting and a wide range of outdoor equipment – that’s what Sport Conrad stands for. But there’s so much more. We also show our passion for mountains by social commitment to people in Nepal.

For many years Sport Conrad have been supporting the Great Compassion Boarding School by various donations and other charity events and therefore helping young people to get good education. The school is located in Nepal, within the highest mountains on earth, the Himalayas. It’s the center of a small village called Lo-Manthang which means “Village of Aspiration” and is located in about 3800 meters above sea level.

Lama Ngawang Kunga Bista, Tibetan monk founded the school project called Great Compassion Boarding School. According to the long tradition Lama Ngawang was sent to live in the monastery Lo-Manthang as soon as he turned five. After finishing his studies he served in the monastery for the next seven year as monk. After that Lama Ngawang was leading the monk-school, to share his wisdom with his students.

But the young monk had more on his mind. His goal was to preserve the Tibetan language and to share Buddhism, which was driven back by the Nepalese government. All of his inspiration and experiences driven him to found the Great Compassion Boarding School, so the boys and girls can receive good general education and increase their chances for a happy and successful life.

In the first few years the school was visited by roughly 30 children. Now more than 200 children have a chance to receive good education and are taught lessons of mathematics, biology, English or physics. Lama Ngawangs has been supported by Swiss Foundation Himalaya’s Children, who helped him through many fundraisers, to realize various projects in the kingdom of Mustang. After the heavy earthquakes in April 2015, a large portion of the funds went into the reconstruction works. New school, family houses and multi-purpose hall were build after the catastrophe.

Sport Conrad is not only bringing you a presentation about the Lama Ngawang’s life-long work, we try to bring you a piece of Nepalese culture, and experience it on your own. That is why we are hosting an event in our Shop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the 8th of December 2016, a multi-vision lecture presented by Lama Ngawang, and everybody is welcome to come!

The 46-year-old Tibetan monk, will tell us about his culture, experiences and most importantly about the every-day life of the Great Compassion. Next to Lama Ngawang we have one more guest, the photographer and trekking guide Michael Markewitsch who will unfold his trekking experiences from the Himalayas.

Michi comes originally from Oberau, a village located near Garmisch-Partenkirchen and is well-known for his entertaining and exciting way of telling stories he collected during his adventures. Michi is has been travelling through Germany for more than 30 years sharing his stories about all the trips to the Himalaya that he considers as “the most beautiful pedestrian zone in the world”.
