Sustainable and functional – is that possible?
Maloja is a “WIR DENKEN UM” brand in our store, because the company attaces great importance to ethics, sustainability, respect for people and nature, it receives the special sustainability certification from us. There is no question that Maloja is also not only concerned about functionality in the development of weather protection membranes, but clearly also focuses on the issue of sustainability at Maloja.
Maloja’s inspiration is to optimally equip people for any weather while protecting the environment. For this reason, Maloja has developed their own sustainable shell series: cembra. The cembra products are mostly made from recycled polyester, are PFC-free impregnated and three of the four cembra technologies are even completely recyclable. Cool, isn’t it?
Maloja’s cembra Shell series is built on a holistic approach. In addition to the material technologies, the shell series should of course also be clear in its name, logo and design.
The bark comparison
A shell material consists of several layers. Depending on the number of layers, the outer material, membrane and carrier fabric are combined to form a laminate. Thus, it protects against weather influences from the outside, is breathable and encloses the body smoothly like a second skin. The logo of cembra already lets you guess that it could be a tree bark. And it was exactly this comparison that Maloja liked best! As the bark protects the tree from the weather, so the shell technologies protect people.
One of the most resistant trees in the alps is the swiss stone pine. The bark of the stone pine, despite the harshest weather conditions, is extremely hardy and alive. These trees can also live over 1000 years. The latin name of these alpine survical artists is Pinus Cembra. Now we also know where the name Cembra comes from and that it reflects the connection to nature. Maloja’s goal is to make products for you that offer uncompromising, long-lasting protection from wind and weather. That’s why every product at Maloja is tested to its limits.
Cembra shell technology

Cembra RESIST – Developed for you to resist in harsh conditions
cembra RESIST is Maloja’s most rugged 3-layer shell that provides reliable waterproof protection in the harshest conditions for mountaineering and freetouring. It is mainly made from recycled polyester. As a mono-component laminate, it can be fully recycled after use.

Cembra LIGHT – Developed to protect you, lightweight & breathable

Products made with cembra LIGHT bring together lightness, breathability and freedom of movement without compromising on reliable waterproof protection. It is partly made from recycled polyester. As a mono-component laminate, it can be fully recycled after use.

Cembra SHELTER – Developed to give you shelter on your adventures
Maloja’s 2-layer shell with padding for additional warmth is the perfect choice when the wind blows while sitting in an old ski lift. The further focus on protection against moisture and ruggedness makes cembra SHELTER a comfortable companion for the backcountry. It is made from recycled polyester. As a mono-component laminate, it can be fully recycled after use.

Cembra BREATHE – Your breathable shell for intensive activities
Maloja’s most breathable, stretchy 3-layer shell for intense activities like cross-country skiing, ski touring or cycling. Due to its membrane technology with fibre-based mesh structure, it combines outstanding moisture management (transports moisture 30 % more than comparable 3-layer products) with maximum wind protection.

Maloja uses this image of the stone pine on its mountain crest on the label – both on the hang tag and as a woven label – on each piece of clothing equipped with one of the four cembra membrane technologies.
