Brooks Running

Brooks – technologie with environmental protection

Not only for extreme runners or trail runners, but also for hobby runners, Brooks is the first port of call when it comes to the right running shoe. You can feel the years of experience in the production of Brooks running shoes with every step. Brooks is streamlining its running shoe range from spring 2021. The leading running shoe brand is revising the categories of its shoes to focus on the runner’s desired running experience – followed by their biomechanical needs. This revision should make it easier for runners to find the right shoe for them.

The category change is part of Brooks’ Fit, Feel and Ride formula. It makes it easier for runners to gain knowledge about the features of each shoe in relation to the running experience. Does a runner want cushioning, energy return or speed? Once the runner has decided on a style, they can still choose between Neutral and Support. In addition to a clearer buying experience for the customer, this change also helps retailers find the right running shoe for each runner.

Sustainability and environmental protection by Brooks

Brooks aims to create the best running gear in the world while reducing environmental impact in line with their science-based climate goals, creating positive social change and being transparent about their efforts. The focus in delivering this vision is to achieve Brooks’ brand goals in the following areas:

1. Product sustainability at Brooks

Reduce environmental impact with a focus on materials, waste and chemicals, and developing a fully recyclable product.

2. Sustainable sources

Work with suppliers to achieve and continuously improve the Brooks Supplier Code of Conduct and standards for responsible and sustainable sourcing.

3. Product-Design for more sustainability

What role does product design play? Waste generated during a shoe manufacturing process can be significantly influenced by design choices. For this reason, Brooks has introduced the following programme: It gives shoe designers feedback loops that assess the waste generated in each case. Central to this is the optimal calculation and planning of patterns for each part of the shoe upper.

4. Product packaging at Brooks

The focus is on reducing material consumption and maximising the use of recycled and recyclable materials: in doing so, the company is making progress towards packaging that minimises its impact on the environment. Since 2012, Brooks has set itself the goal of reducing material weight.

5. Eco-friendly materials

Considering the high environmental impact, the company works hard behind the scenes to select materials that are optimal for both your run and the environment. Recycled polyester and biodegradable midsoles in shoes: The footwear team has focused on incorporating more sustainable materials into shoes over the past seven years. To do this, the product team uses the Higg Design & Development Module (Higg DDM), which helps them make strategic material decisions for the benefit of people and the environment. As a result, Brooks has already been able to use 44 % bluesign certified materials in 2018.

6. Climate protection at Brooks

In 2010, the company carried out a complete greenhouse gas inventory of all activities implemented by them and their business partners. The question behind it: Where are the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions and to what extent can they be controlled? As with most companies in this industry, the majority of emissions come from sources that cannot be directly controlled (materials, manufacturing and transport).

Understanding the overall carbon footprint allows for a focus on ongoing efforts to track, measure and reduce. The footwear company continues to measure the largest contributors of direct sources of CO² emissions annually, as well as the largest contributors of indirect sources, where it has been determined that these can be influenced or measures can be taken to reduce them. In 2018, for example, Brooks was already able to simultaneously reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 7 % compared to the previous year, despite strong economic growth. Brooks offers running shoes, apparel and accessories and has committed itself to being CO² neutral in all business areas by 2040.

We at Sport Conrad believe that these efforts are a step in the right direction and hope that this positive trend will continue. You want to know more about our Wir denken um label? Here you can find more interesting blog posts on the topic of sustainability:
