Lake Achensee: Five summits in one day

A via ferrata route high above Lake Achensee leads over five peaks. The best thing about the tour: You can shorten the route after each via ferrata and hike down to the mountain station of the Rofan cable car in about an hour. A via ferrata day couldn’t be more flexible!

Achensee

If you let five-year-olds paint a mountain, the Matterhorn will probably be it. And what would a mountain lake look like? Probably just like the Achensee! Long, narrow, turquoise blue, with steep rock and forest flanks, crowned by peaks.

The Alpenfjord, eight kilometers long and one kilometer wide, is the largest lake in Tyrol. It divides the Karwendel and Brandenberger Alps. Here, all outdoor athletes will find perfect conditions for their hobby. No matter whether you are a paraglider, paddler, mountain biker or via ferrata hiker. Far above the lake, one of the most fascinating tours awaits vertigo-free, sure-footed and persistent ferraristi: The 5-summits via ferrata.

Five summits in one day

The 5-summits via ferrata is one of the most rewarding in Tyrol. From every peak you can enjoy a great view over to the Karwendel mountains, towards the Lechtal Alps and to the Hohe Tauern. The via ferratas can be combined in any way and you can also reach each peak on easy paths and trails. Here are three more reasons why you should definitely visit the via ferrata:

  1. Thanks to the Rofan cable car, you can almost fly from the lake (929 m) to the summit station (1840 m) in just a few minutes.
  2. Just one hour of hiking – and the game begins!
  3. The five via ferratas can each be climbed independently and a return to the cabin never takes more than about an hour.

So, have you already put on your mountain boots? Is the via ferrata set stowed in your backpack? Helmet and harness are packed? Food and plenty of water are prepared for a long day of climbing? Then you’re ready to go!
Experienced and fit climbers can climb this route with approximately 800 vertical meters in one day (pure walking time: around six to eight hours), beginners or families with sporty children from 12 years on can only do three of the five peaks – or, depending on their mood, only one. The via ferrata is usually climbed counterclockwise.

The first peak: Haidachstellwand (2192 m)

This first of five peaks protrudes from the Rofan main ridge to the east of the mountain station. From the mountain station, hike on the Grubersteig towards Rofanspitze and always turn towards the Haidachstellwand. After about an hour of walking it is time to start! After four short sections with difficulty rating B / C, 120 vertical meters in the via ferrata and an hour of beautiful climbing on the best iron trails you will reach the first cross on your first summit.

The second peak: Rosskopf (2246 m)

From the Haidachstellwand it’s only a few minutes to the Gruberscharte. Here you go left towards Spieljoch and beneath the reddish walls of the Rosskopf to the second start. But be careful – put on your helmet because there’s quite a risk of falling rocks! The via ferrata itself is nice and airy, but also quite greasy. So take care when it is wet! Two parts have the level of difficulty C / D, one of them is waiting for you at the start. If you are already reaching your limits here, you should better turn around. After an hour and a half of climbing and about 150 meters of altitude you are at the summit – and you can already see the next two peaks: Seekarlspitze and Spieljoch.

The third peak: Seekarlspitze (2261 m)

It’s short, but the hardest peak of the day in terms of difficulty. On the saddle between Rosskopf and Seekarlspitze you can go on an airy adventure. The via ferrata starts with a flat B / C part, then becomes easier (A to B). At the end, at an edge just below the summit, the difficulty goes up to D once more. But after just 70 meters of altitude and half an hour of climbing, you’re already on the third of five peaks.

The fourth peak: Spieljoch (2236 m)

Compared to the Seekarlspitze, the number four up to Spieljoch is quite harmless. The via ferrata on the sunny south-west side leads to the summit of the Spieljoch (2236 m) in half an hour and only 100 meters of climbing. There’s only one small part with difficulty C.

The fifth peak: Hochiss (2299 m)

The day is slowly coming to an end – and the last cable car goes down to the Achensee at half past six in midsummer. So mobilize all your strength and summit the Hochiss (2299 m), the highest mountain in the Rofan! It’s definetely going to be worth it – the Hochiss might be the last peak but it’s also the highlight of this tour. In the lower part there are two C-spots, in the middle of the 180-meter via ferrata and just below the summit there is another C / D spot – and then you finally did it: The five via ferratas in one day!

Descent

From the summit of Hochiss, follow the signs to the Rofan cable car or Erfurt cabin (which is located directly at the top station of the cable car).
